End of Season Wrap-up

Hi Everyone

Thanks for everyone coming out to Aim and Game for the end-of-season party. It was an amazing time with all the sailors.

Huge thanks to Karen and Lorena for planning the end of season party and Lorena for organizing the catering! Thank you also to all of the parents who chipped in to make it happen. And of course, thank you to parents and sailors for the cards!

The NW district is still finalizing the spring regatta schedule and we will update the website and send out an email once we know more.  Tentative dates for the spring season are from the start of March to the middle of May. We are hosting a team race regatta April 20/21.

Thanks to everyone for a great fall season,

Anna Morrow

Re: Sailing End-of-Season Party

Hi everyone,

Reminder that we have the Sailing team end-of-season party tomorrow, Friday Dec. 1st, at Aim and Game in Ferndale from 6:00pm-9:00pm!

I wanted to clarify again that it is the Aim and Game in Ferndale, at the address 5610 Barrett Road. I apologize I sent out the address for the wrong Aim and Game in my original email.

We will have dinner, trivia, and gel blaster games available. Sailors, please dress accordingly with clothes you can get dirty if you are planning on doing the gel blaster thing.

Thank you to those that have responded to my previous email with an RSVP! If you haven't yet, please RSVP on the Google Calendar event, or email us and let us know if you / your sailor can make it.

Thanks again to Lorena and Karen for organizing! Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at Ferndale Aim and Game!

Best,

Anna

Also, the event space is rented starting at 6:00pm but sailors are encouraged to arrive early if possible in order to maximize our time there!

Please let us know if you have any more questions.

We hope to see you at the Ferndale Aim and Game at 6:00pm on Friday!

We will have dinner starting at 6pm, which will be followed by trivia and then an hour-long gel blaster game. Gel blasters are a lot milder than paintball but they can still stain, so I would recommend sailors bring clothes that they are okay with getting messy. If sailors could bring around $10-15 per sailor to help cover the costs of the game etc., that would be much appreciated but is of course not required if the cost is a barrier.

Aim and Game is located at 211 Grover St, Lynden, WA 98264. It's about 15 minutes north of downtown Bellingham.

Thank you so much to parents Lorena and Karen for planning this event. They are cc'd on this email.

Thank you as well as our team captains Katy, Willow, and August!

An Important Reminder & our Winter Fundraiser!

Quick Reminder : Please email coach@whatcomsailing.com or send a message to remind in order to let the coaches know if you are going to be late or miss a practice.

Hello Sailors, Families and Fans!

This Winter the Community Boating Center, Whatcom Sailing , Bellingham Yacht Club, the Community Boating Center and the Western Washington University Sailing will be hosting a joint fundraiser with proceeds directly supporting youth sailing in the region.  We are currently in the process of building out a team of volunteers to assist us in the planning and execution of this event.

Not only is sailing a fantastic lifetime sport, but it is a mechanism to teach youth a whole host of life skills : teamwork, problem solving, environmental awareness, independence, confidence, safety and responsibility, It offers a unique blend of physical, mental, and personal development benefits for youth - but it's not an affordable sport. This fundraiser aims to relieve some of the costs associated with sailing from families - allowing us to have a more equitable, inclusive and accessible sport.

There are many ways you can support youth sailing: monetary donations, item procurement, volunteering and an offering of expertise - your involvement in this event is highly appreciated!  In the attached document, we have a list of volunteer roles we are filling to support the fundraising event on November 18th.  These ask for a variety of skills and commitment levels we're looking for!

When you've found the perfect role, please fill out our volunteer signup here - volunteersignup.org/BKA9J.

Thank you for all of your support,

Scott, Anna, Cooper & Sara

Hello Sailors + Parents!

Regatta sign ups are live and accessible through this sheet!

Please note, that means that the sign ups for Single Hands Sept 16-17 will close tomorrow evening!

Thank you all, please reply to this email with any follow up questions.

Sailing Team - Pre-Season Mtg Recap

Hello Sailors and Parents,

Below is a recap of the pre-season meeting for those of you who weren't able to attend.  Please register ASAP, if you haven't already.   Please read over the information below for more details.

SWIM TEST
The swim test will be at Arne Hanna tomorrow and Wednesday at 6:30pm.  Please come to either time, but everyone must pick one of the two days to complete your test.  The test is swimming 50 yards and treading water for 5 minutes, all without touching the bottom.  Bring a swimsuit and towel.

ABOUT THE TEAM
All local high school sailing is organized and managed by Whatcom Sailing.  We focus on racing, not learning how to sail. The high school sailing team is a recognized club sport at each school and we treat it the same as any school sport. Therefore, the expectations are the same regarding attendance at practices and races as any sport. Practices and regattas are required.

Other sailing or sports:  Sometimes kids try to juggle multiple sports or other sailing opportunities while being on the sailing team.  This is not allowed, and please understand that if you miss practices or regattas, that will be taken into consideration when deciding things like who races with who, who can go to regattas, etc.  We reward those who are committed to the team.

Unlike summer youth circuit racing, all the organization and registration for regattas is done by Whatcom Sailing.  This way the students can focus on school and not have to worry about planning for the next regatta.

EMAIL
Our primary form of communication is done via email, so please help us out and  respond to emails quickly and make sure we have your current email address for students and parents.

TEXT MESSAGING NOTIFICATIONS
We use a text message notification system for all the sailors. The messaging service is called Remind. To sign up send a text message:

TO: 81010
Message: @sailboats

FEES
Cost is $350 per season plus a $35 uniform fee.  The uniform fee will be reimbursed if the pinnie is returned at the end of the season. We never want cost to be a reason why someone is not participating so please contact me if you or someone you know needs financial assistance.  We have scholarship money for kids that are on the free or reduced lunch program.

REGISTRATION STEPS
1. Register and pay with Whatcom Sailing.  https://www.whatcomsailing.com/join
2. Complete the school athletic registration online.  This is now being done with the Final Forms program.  See attached documents for more information.   Kids attending schools not part of the Bellingham School District DO NOT need to do this.
A sports physical is also required, so get that scheduled ASAP.

3. Get cleared with your school.  Talk to your AD secretary to confirm you are cleared.
REGISTRATION NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOU CAN PRACTICE.

PRACTICES
Regular Practice:
  • All teams – Tuesday and Thursday – 3:45 to 6:30
•First Practice – Thursday 8/31
•Last Practice – Thursday 10/26

For the first practice please meet at the Bellingham Yacht Club downstairs.

PARENTS - Please help us by scheduling dentist and doctors appointments around our regular practices. Practices are held at Zuanich Park dock. Carpools from school to practice will be arranged at the first practice.

We require all sailors to have a Type III Coastguard approved life jacket, a whistle attached to your life jacket and a wetsuit. There will be days where we will require a wetsuit or you won't be able to sail. We strongly encourage proper gear, such as gloves, booties and no cotton. On our gear page on the website, we suggest places to buy gear and what kind of gear to get. (westcoastsailing.com offers high school students 15% off gear and free shipping, just enter code ISSA.  Kite Paddle Surf in Bellingham also offers a 15% discount, just mention you are on the high school sailing team.) Please ask us or your fellow sailors what gear we recommend if you have any questions.

Running shoes and workout gear are also required.  We will be having workout days where we will be running and doing other cardio exercises.  You will be expected to run and workout with the team at any practice.
We would like you to consider buying and wearing a helmet as well.  Especially if you are new to sailing or have had a previous concussion.  Concussions can happen by getting hit in the head by the boom and can be very serious.  Here is more information about sailing concussions:

SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
We follow the same requirements as the high schools for athletes.  This means that students must attend all classes the day of a practice AND must be passing all classes.  If either of these are failed then you may not practice.  If you miss a class you need to get it excused and cleared with the AD secretary before practice.  You can check your eligibility at any time via Final Forms.

REGATTAS
Please see the website for a schedule of all regattas.  www.whatcomsailing.com

PARENTS
We are excited to have your sailor on the team, and will be kept very busy organizing practices & regattas, and teaching them how to become awesome racers! So, we will need your help! Regatta travel is usually based on parent drivers. We try to reimburse for gas, and food is usually free for parents or very cheap. Please take a look at the regatta schedule and make note on which regattas you would be able to drive.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email or visit the website for information. I am excited to be starting another season of sailing!

See you on the water!

Year-End Sailing Team Dinner / Potluck - UPDATE

Hi there,
Just an update on today's party.
While the weather is not ideal, everything is still a go.  We have a contingency plan for rain...although the sprinkling of rain has come earlier than expected so maybe it will peeter out by the 5:30pm.
We have a big shop and a propane fire and a heater. Bring your chairs and dress in layers.  In other words...just pretend we are at a regatta! LOL.  We have an outdoor firepit which will be rip roarin' and we'll set up the tents for the food / tables. If you have a tent, please feel free to bring it.
We also have a ballfield so throw your gloves in the car just in case the kids decide to have a short game.
We will need our driveway for tents, so parking on the street would be best.
See you at 5:30pm !

Upcoming Regattas

Great job to everyone this weekend.  Bellingham had a great regatta and qualified for Districts.  Thanks to the parents, especially Rob and Loraina, for driving two cars and providing such great food both days!

The upcoming schedule looks like this:

April 22-23 - The varsity teams only will go to Orcas for a two day team race regatta.  This will be Sehome varsity and possibly Bellingham varsity.  Everyone else will go to Anacortes for a 1 day regatta on Sunday only, not Saturday.

April 29-30 - This is Team Race District Champs in Oak Harbor and will likely only be Sehome, but possibly Bellingham.  But it depends on how both teams perform at Orcas.  If you lose most of your races then it may not be appropriate to go to this one.

May 6-7 - This is Fleet Race District Champs in Cascade Locks OR.  This will only be Sehome and Bellingham varsity.  Coaches will pick who goes to this one, but if you want to be considered please indicate so by signing up on the regatta signup.

May 13-14 - This is the final fleet race of the season at Oak Harbor.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

May 20-21 - This is the final team race of the season at Silverdale. Everyone is welcome to attend.

In order to plan these remaining regattas I need to have everyone fill out the regatta signup.  Please do this ASAP.  Here is the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11I6siGsA7Rv1akjqlePjGLAvvKmJ6aHjiJ0IaVjm8to/edit#gid=283052418

Driving this Weekend

Sailors and Parents,

I can confirm that the Waldorf school finally got back to me and we can not stay there this weekend.  So we all will need to drive back Saturday evening.  Drivers, I have heard some of you were thinking of staying in a hotel, but this would be a problem since we have kids driving down with all of you.  Drivers, please confirm you are able to drive down and back both days.

ALSO, we are still short seats.  Can we get one more parent to volunteer to drive?
Here's what I have now, drivers please confirm your seats.

Team Race Clinic Details

This weekend there are two events: A varsity team race clinic at Bainbridge Island and a JV team race clinic at Orcas Island.  We were only given 2 berths (pairs of sailors) for the Bainbridge clinic so I could not get more of you to that one.

The group going to Bainbridge is Sammy, Bella, Keagan, Cole, Britton.  Chaperone is Dave Sanford.

The group going to Orcas is Hans S, Katy, Emma, Bryce, Julian, Tristan, Max.  PARENTS, please let me know if you can chaperone / drive.  Everyone will be camping for this event so plan on that.

I will send out another email to each group with details for your specific event.
