Re: Gold Champs 5/10-5/11 in Anacortes

So sorry everyone, I was clearly not fully awake when I wrote this email last night!

To clarify:

Silver (Open) Champs is this weekend in Anacortes May 3-4

Gold Fleet Champs is next weekend in Hood River, Oregon May 10-11

The Silver (Open) Champs email is accurate, I got dates and location confused when I wrote the gold fleet champs email. Gold champs are in Oregon May 10-11, NOT Anacortes. These are two completely separate events, unlike last year.

Gold Champs schedule is as follows:
Friday, May 9, 2025
Carpools leave as sailors are available on Friday- we will sort out carpools at practice the week before so sailors can plan. No meeting at Sehome Haggens due to differing departure times.

Saturday, May 10, 2025
1000 Report Time. Registration
Check-in, boat rigging begins
1030 Mandatory Competitors Meeting
1100 First Warning: Racing will continue throughout the day.
Eat during boat rotation – no lunch break.

Sunday, May 11, 2025
0900 Report Time
1000 First Warning: Racing will continue throughout the day.
Eat during boat rotation – no lunch break.
1500 No races started after this time.
1530 Results and awards presentation

Again, my apologies for the confusion, and thank you to those who noticed the error and let me know.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions!

Best,
Anna

4/17 Practice Debrief + Goals Form + Photo Album

Hi Sailors,

Some homework to do before Tuesday's practice. I know this is more than usual, but this is all very important as we get into our champs season.

Practice Debrief + Photo Album

Link to our photo album. Please find and review your videos. If you have any questions let me know. Looking at your boat maneuvers from an outside perspective helps so much!

Don't worry if the one video I took of you was a bad tack or acceleration. Bad tacks happen from time to time, but it is important to break down the video and understand "Why was this tack a bad tack, and what led to it?". The goal is to be more consistent.

FJ acceleration example videos. Light Air Accelerations. Watch through the first couple accelerations and focus on boat 17. Some things to highlight is how much they control the boat with their body weight. They have a great shoulder out snap flatten. The crew does an amazing job in the first acceleration! Our goal is to get the boat flat as fast as possible. Notice how the skipper has to lean back towards the stern of the boat to get a good flatten and still be able to turn up. Later on in the video at 1:20, the skipper of boat 15 does huge shoulders out flatten. This should be the standard. Last thing to note is how smooth and continuous the body/boat movements are.

This example video has much more wind. Notice how the acceleration changes when they have more wind. The wind does most of the work of creating heel. Then both sailors hike hard to flatten and then they are off racing. Not wasting any time slowly getting the boat flat.

Here is the Laser example of shooting up at the start line. While it's much more effective in a laser, it's still a great tool to use during FJ starts. If you find yourself with both of your neighbors bow out on you at the start, you should shoot up and try to regain good positioning. It allows you to increase how big your leeward gap is. Just be careful about shooting up too much and being over early. We are going to practice this next week and then hopefully be able to do magic carpet.

Also please watch through our first practice race from Thursday's practice. The race is split up into three videos (Start, windward rounding, and finish). The start video is the one that's 35 seconds long. This is the best start I've seen from you guys! Everyone on the line with speed. This race was super competitive all the way through. Look how grouped up everyone is at the windward mark.

Goals Form

Please complete this goals form

Thank you sailors for making Thursday's practice competitive and fun!

Enjoy your weekend,

Cooper

Whatcom Sailing Schedule

Hi Everyone,

With about a month remaining on our Spring Season, I wanted to go over the last couple events.

Silver Fleet Race Champs @ Anacortes May 3/4
We will be sending everyone that we can to this event. If you are also attending Gold FR Champs the following weekend and want to sail at Silver FR Champs, you will have to sail your off position. e.g. if you crew at Silver, then you have to skipper at Gold, if you plan on going to both.

Gold Fleet Race Champs @ Columbia River Gorge May 10/11
This event is the one that teams qualify for at ranking regattas. Bellingham High School qualified. Both Sehome and Squilcum are on the waiting list if any other teams drop from this event. Sehome is 2nd and Squalicum is 3rd on the list.

Golden Bailer Regatta @ Bellingham May 13
Some might say this is the most important regatta all year. We will be hosting the Golden Bailer Regatta on May 13 at practice.

Final Practice May 15
Putting away boats day.

End of Season Party - Date TBD
We are starting to plan our End of Season Party. The date is not set but will most likely be the weekend of May 17/18 or sometime in the following week. Let us know if you would like to host, help plan, or have a time conflict.

Thank you everyone for a great season so far!

Best,
Cooper

Hi everyone,

Last call for any sailors/parents that want to come watch the team racing this weekend at Zuanich. It's a great opportunity for sailors to watch high level team racing. Just let me know if you are going to be around or want to help out.

I hope everyone is having a great spring break!

Hi everyone,

Happy Spring break!

We are hosting the gold team race qualifier race this Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13th at Zuanich. Here is the Notice of Race, which includes the schedule for this weekend: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lZFxamfVAcDps0jS8sHKOoW6S20XwJHLd5z_sPR7vsM/edit?usp=sharing.

Because of the timing of this event with spring break, we sadly do not have enough skippers to form a team racing team for either gold or silver, and will not be able to compete. However, I strongly encourage sailors that are in town to come out for one or both days to watch and help with racing.

We have two umpires this weekend that have offered a ride along to any high school sailors who are familiar with the racing rules of sailing sections A and B. This is a super cool learning opportunity and I would love for a couple of our sailors who are in town to take part if possible, even if you can only make it one of the days.

Any parents and sailors interested in being involved on or off the water please reach out to me ASAP. I am sending out the volunteer logistics document to all volunteers. If you plan to volunteer and talked to me already but did not get sent the Volunteer logistics, please follow up.
