Sailing Team Pre-Season Meeting

Sailors and Parents,

On Monday, Aug 23th, we will have our High School Sailing Pre-Season meeting, 6pm @ The Bellingham Yacht Club in the downstairs room.  This meeting is for both parents and students who plan to be on the team or are interested in learning more about it.  The team is open to all high schoolers in Whatcom County. 8th graders are also welcome if you have racing experience.  We have many important topics to cover at the meeting including practice and regatta schedules and expectations. It will also be a good meeting to attend for new sailors interested in joining the team, so encourage anyone who might be interested to come.

Practice and Regatta schedule for the season are posted on the website: http://www.whatcomsailing.com/schedule.html

Practice starts Thursday Sep 2nd @ 3:45 at the Bellingham Yacht Club.

REGISTRATION & TEAM FEES
Team fees are $200 for the fall season. As always, we don't want these fees to stop anyone from participating so please let me know if you need financial assistance.

Registration is online.  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

ALSO, all high schoolers (not 8th grade) must do the required sports clearance with your school.  This is an online process now at your schools website.  Here are links to each schools athletic registration process:

A sports physical is also required, so get that scheduled ASAP.

Registration and school clearance is required before you can practice. For a list of everything that is required see the Join Page of our website.  Attached is the sailor packet with more information.

We will go over all this in more detail at the meeting, but feel free to contact me if you have questions!

Golden Bailer Postponed

Tomorrow's Golden Bailer race has been cancelled.  The wind forecast is too strong for a safe race.  I will work on rescheduling and get back to you.

Re: Golden Bailer

Just a heads up that right now the forecast is for too much wind for our Golden Bailer race.  If that forecast remains we will have to reschedule again.  I will make a go/no go decision tomorrow.
Also, please send me who you plan to sail with and if you need help finding a partner let me know and I can pair you up.

End of Season

Today, May 18th, is the last day of practice. Looking forward to a breezy afternoon and hopefully some sunshine!

As we wrap up the season I wanted to thank everyone for their flexibility as we got back in the swing of things. Districts went off without a hitch. Congratulation to Sehome for finishing 5th overall and Bellingham for finishing 12th. A big thank you to all the sailors who came out to support their teams.

We have set a tentative date for the most important race of the year. We will plan to hold The Golden Bailer race on Saturday May 29th. This date is weather dependent and could get pushed back if conditions are not superb. We will also plan to have an end of season party and awards night on the same day as the Golden Bailer race. More info on that coming soon. If you are interested in hosting that event please let me know.

I also wanted to share with you some opportunities for summer sailing:

The Bellingham Yacht Club has a race team program that practices throughout the summer season.  This program is run by our own Coach Shea! They sail a variety of boats and attend regattas in the Northwest Youth Racing Circuit. A great way to improve your skills before we start up again next fall. Check out the program at youth.byc.org

The Community Boat Center in Fairhaven also has summer programs. Check them out here: https://www.boatingcenter.org/

Fleet Race Districts this Weekend

This weekend we are hosting fleet race districts down on the bay.  The regatta is a two day event, both Saturday and Sunday.  The NOR for the event is attached.  This is the final district regatta of the season with the top two teams qualifying for nationals.  Only one team per school is allowed at district championship events.  The Sehome team this weekend will be Keller, Natalie, Bailey, Tristan with Mike, Keagan, and Liv as alternates.  Bellingham will be Ian, Mia, Talia, Tess and Wyatt and Willow as alternates. Everyone else is welcome and encouraged to come watch or help me run races.

Parents, if you are available to help I could use people on shore and water to help with logistics and race committee.  Let me know if you are available.

Skippers meeting will be Friday via Zoom.  Link in the NOR.
The schedule is also in the NOR.  However, I would like our team to arrive at 9:30 on Saturday rather than 10 to help get boats rigged.

Thanks,

Scott Wilson
