Regatta Updates

Sailors,

Some updates for you all on the upcoming weeks.

First, since we are not racing tomorrow and Sunday we will have a practice at Lakewood at 10am both days.  We will practice till early afternoon, or till we get tired, and break during the day for lunch.  I suggest packing a lunch.  I plan to bring a video camera and film you all sailing and then spending some time reviewing the video during lunch.

Next week is spring break for everyone.  We do still have practice at normal time, but if you want to come a bit early and get boats rigged and splashed we could spend more time sailing.

Next weekend, April 7th and 8th we have off.  Possible practice on Saturday if there is interest.

The rest of the season looks like this:
April 14-15 CK Regatta at Silverdale
April 21st - Port Townsend
April 28-29 - Team Race District Champs we are hosting in Bellingham
May 5-6 - Doublehanded District Champs - Seattle (VARSITY TEAMS ONLY)

See you tomorrow.

Re: Orcas Regatta Details

Hi All,

You now no longer have to bring anything, but please come Sat. night at
5 to the BYC. Want to give a big thank you to Kirstin Reid for her help
with the food. Robin and Will are going to bring some videos/slides of
some of you sailing to be shown at the event. The money is going to the
BYC for maintaining the FJ'S, Opti's, mark boats, dinghy docks, etc.
The important thing is that it's going to benefit youth sailing in
Whatcom County and everyone that is interested in helping are youth
sail should, if possible come Sat. Remember, it includes dinner after
the very good slides. Even those on the High School team at one time
started sailing through the BYC and we need to keep the program going
so more young kids can get into it. I volunteer because I feel one
should give back to the sport you have enjoyed doing. Speaking of that,
I can't pass up this opportunity to say how very lucky the High School
Team is to have Scott Wilson with the zillion hours he must put in(with
help from his wife).
Hope to see you Sat.

Gary Baker

Hi Sailors and parents of sailors!

Gary Baker of the Bellingham Yacht Club asked me to spread the word and
ask if anyone can help out next Saturday for a Junior Sailing Fund
Raising event at the Bellingham Yacht Club. All of the money raised
will go towards Junior Sailing/High School Sailing and maintaining the
fleet of FJ's that the club has purchased for youth  sailing and for
the High School sailing team. It is a great cause to help out with
and this will be a fun evening!

Gary has arranged for a world cruiser to come and talk about his
experiences cruising with his family in far flung parts of the world.
It will be a fascinating presentation and slide show for everyone.
There will be a potluck dinner provided by everyone who volunteers to
help. This is where you can really help out to make the evening work!
Bring a dish for everyone to share. Some members of the Anacortes YC
are coming up as guests (paying guests) as well as some other clubs so
we need lots of food to feed these people. The theme of the dinner is
Italian, although don't feel you have to adhere too closely to this
theme. The time is 5 pm on Saturday, March 31. The suggested donation
for adults is $8 (for teens and youths $5).

March 31 was the only date the speaker could make it, so that is the
date. There is a one day High School regatta that same day, but it
should work out to have both activities on the same day even if the
high school sailors don't get back in time for the presentation. The
important part is to get some volunteers to make food for the evening!

Sailors and Parents,

We will be meeting tomorrow at the Sehome Haggens at 6:00pm.
Departing from there to catch the next ferry to Orcas.  We will be
attempting to catch the 3:15 ferry off the island on Sunday.

You need to bring: Sleeping bag, sleeping pad (the floor is wood),
pillow, $25 entry fee, all your sailing gear, and a sheet for the
togo dance they are hosting on Saturday night.

The entry fee covers food for the weekend except for tomorrow night,
so you should bring something or there may be food available on the
ferry.  You do not need to bring any money for ferry or gas, the team
pays for that.

Riley Ghio, don't forget to pick up the mast from Lakewood tomorrow
(otherwise you will have to hold the sail up yourself).

Let me know if you have any questions,

Scott

Re: Team Race Districts: Hosting and Feeding

Thanks Jo for taking the lead on this.  We will also need to provide housing for the teams staying Friday and Saturday nights.  Please let me know if you would be willing to host a team at your house.  Keep in mind that teams would typically range in size from 10-20 kids, they would be bringing sleeping bags and pads to sleep on the floor.  All you would have to do as a host is provide a place to sleep and bathroom.  You would not need to provide any food or entertainment.  When we travel to regattas we typically bring 15-20 kids and they all sleep side by side in a small rec room or living room.  This is what everyone is used to.  If you have an extra bed or couch for the coach that is a plus also.  If you have any questions for how it works you can ask me or your kids, they can tell you what is typical.

Please let me know if you can host.  Thanks,

Scott

I have attached the beginnings of a menu for the weekend. The goal is to provide hot and high protein food and to keep it coming!  I am also trying to plan for pre-cooking when possible (i.e. macaroni and cheese as a casserole) to both simplify serving and to give our grilling team a break during the day. This list is just the first draft.  If you have suggestions, resources, ideas--all are welcome.

One option I would like to move on with your input is the Baker's Breakfast Cookie.  I can purchase 14 boxes of 16 three oz. cookies (224 count) for approximately $170.00 online. If one of you is a Costco member and willing to push the Big Cart for team and country, the website states that this offer is also available in Costco outlets.  This would save shipping costs.   I am not sure how long this offer will last, so time is of the essence.  The grab-and-go option is a good one for the first morning, as sailors arrive at staggered times.

This should get us started.  I thank you for your time and support.

Orcas Island Regatta Next

Team,

Wow, what a great day!  Some interesting weather, but we had wind and overall a pretty successful regatta.  Great job sailing and hosting.  We finished 2nd and 4th in the FJ fleet and 1st and 9th in the alpha fleet.  I'll send all results soon.

Awesome job by the parents for such great food and preparation with the lunches.  All the coaches were really impressed and I heard some good comments from the sailors also.

But now we move on to upcoming sailing events,

First, tomorrow we will be practicing some team racing at lakewood with the Portland team.  Please come down at 9:30 if you can, but this practice is not required, just for fun.

Next weekend we are heading to Orcas Island for some racing in V15s. The following are signed up so far:

Robyn, Miles, Liam, Elsa, Clara R, Clara E, Riley G, Zoe, Ben, Victoria, Jeffrey, Kyle, Kara, Sawyer, Jack, Elise  (Let me know if you are missing from this list)

Some details for next weekend: Cost $25 (includes 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and one dinner sat night), racing on Saturday and Sunday, spending the night Friday and Saturday nights on Orcas Island.  We will leave Friday afternoon, and return Sunday evening.

We do need drivers for this event, so parents please let me know if you are able to come along.

Again, great job to everyone, sailors and parents today!

Scott

Lakewood Regatta Details

This weekend our regatta is here in town at Lakewood on Saturday.  We will have a great turnout of around 140 sailors.  The following sailors have committed to sailing this weekend: Elsa, Liam, Miles, Victoria, Sawyer, Ben, Shannon, Jack, Jeffrey, Riley G, Kara, Elise, Robyn, Curran, Clara E, and Nick.  That is 16 which is exactly 4 teams.  If anyone is missing from this list I can add you, but no one is allowed to drop out.

You will all need to be at lakewood by 8:30 to help rig boats.  Entry fee is $5 dollars per sailor, which covers the food that Karen (Rileys mom) and Heather (Clara E's mom) will be preparing.  I expect everyone that is sailing this weekend to help out whenever possible.  Help the other teams get their boats rigged, launched, de-rigged, etc.  Make sure everyone uses our procedures for taking care of boats.

Also, the Orcas team will be here Friday afternoon and the Portland team will be staying Sunday morning.  They would like to have a team race scrimmage with us both those days.  Exact time to be determined, but likely Friday at 3:00 and Sunday morning around 9:00.  Let me know if you are available to come practice those times.

If you have any questions let me know.

Portland Regatta Details

Team,

Here's who I have signed up for this weekends regatta in Portland:

Miles, Elise, Ben, Zoe, Sawyer, Clara R, Jeffrey, Riley G, Riley A, and Kara.

Please let me know ASAP the earliest time you can leave on Friday after school.  We will set a time to leave based on everyone's responses.

COST: Bring $20 dollars for entry fee.  Entry fee covers lunch both days and dinner Saturday, plus snacks.  Bring extra money for dinner on Friday night, breakfast both Saturday and Sunday, and dinner Sunday evening.  We will be going somewhere cheap like Subway for these.

HOUSING:  We will be staying with a host family Friday and Saturday nights.  Location is still to be determined.  You will need to bring a sleeping bag, pad, and pillow for sleeping on the floor of the house.

DRIVING:  We could still use another car to drive down this weekend.  If any parents are willing to drive and can fit at least 5 in your car let me know.  Otherwise we will be renting a large van.

We will be returning late on Sunday.  Races are scheduled to end around 3 pm Sunday and we will pack up and return as soon as they are finished.

Thanks,

Scott Wilson

Sailing Workouts

Sailors,

Attached are some sailing workouts you can do to get in better shape.  I know there is a group of you going and working out together which is great!  I strongly encourage the rest of you to workout as much as possible, you will notice a big difference at the regattas.  Good luck.

Portland, Lakewood, Sweatshirts

Great job to everyone at yesterdays regatta.  I appreciate you all sacrificing some sailing time to let each other sail, and the other teams.  I also appreciate you all helping the other teams rig and de-rig their boats.  The other coaches were very impressed with you.

Portland Regatta

Our regatta next weekend is down in Portland.  We will be leaving Friday afternoon, the earlier the better, but we will base that decision on everyone's schedules.  It will be a two day event, spending the night both Friday and Saturday with a host family.  We will return Sunday evening.  We do need drivers, preferably with a fuel efficient car!  Let me know if you are willing to drive.

WWU Lakewood Regatta March 17th

The following weekend is the regatta we are co-hosting with the WWU sailing team.   They will be organizing the racing side of the event and we will be organizing the food side.  Parents, if you can help organize food please let me know.

Sweatshirts

We are ordering team sweatshirts designed by Miles.  A picture of what the sweatshirt will look like is attached.  Please pre-order by filling out this form so I know how many to get.

Thanks,

SYC Regatta Details

Team,

Here are details for tomorrows regatta:

We will be meeting at the Sehome Haggens parking lot at 6:45am.  There will be two cars driving down.  Robyn's dad Will is driving his large 15 passenger van and I will also be driving with room for 3.  We have 16 sailors going, Elsa, Liam, Miles, Victoria, Sawyer, Ben, Zoe, Jack, Clara R, Jeffrey, Riley G, Kara, Elise, Kyle, Robyn, and Curran.  Steve Hood, if you still want to ride along there should be an extra seat.

Everyone please pack warm clothes as it will be very cold this weekend and possibly rainy.  Bring warm gloves, booties, hats, and warm base layers.  AND, pack this all in the smallest bag you can.  There will be limited room for gear in the two vehicles.

Bring 15 dollars for food.  They are providing lunch which is typically pretty good.

Racing will continue through the day until the sun goes down at which point we will pack up and return, hopefully by 8pm, plus or minus a couple hours.

See you all tomorrow,
