Rules Discussion

Tacking at Leeward Mark

There was some confusion yesterday at practice over a particular rule so I wanted to pass on some clarification.  Paul, this is the video I think you were referring to http://www.sailgroove.org/speaker/1804-Matt-Knowles/video/84529-Episode-7-A-New-Mark-Trap

This loop hole was removed when they released changes to the rules in 2010.  18.2(b) was changed from:

When a boat is required to give mark-room by rule 18.2(b), she
shall continue to do so even if later an overlap is broken or a
new overlap begins. However, if either boat passes head to
wind or if the boat entitled to mark-room leaves the zone, rule
18.2(b) ceases to apply.

TO:

When a boat is required to give mark-room by rule 18.2(b), she
shall continue to do so even if later an overlap is broken or a
new overlap begins. However, if the boat entitled to markroom
passes head to wind or leaves the zone, rule 18.2(b)
ceases to apply.

This means that 18.2(b) still applies to the boat that tacks because only if "the boat entitled to mark room" passes head to wind does 18.2(b) cease to apply.  This change was added to the rules jan 1 2010.  Be sure to note the changes in your rule books.

Also, I wanted to point out the following two calls from the team race call book.  They are good examples of the difference between Keep Clear and Mark Room.  The calls are J4 and J5 from the call book here:http://www.sailing.org/tools/documents/TRCallBookforTeamRacingfor20092012updatedNov2010-[9670].pdf

Practice

Team,

We are going to have a joint practice this week with the Western team for anyone who is interested.  I would especially recommend it for those going to the Rose Bowl regatta.  Please email me back if you are interested and when you are available between Wednesday-Saturday.  We could run it at anytime those days so we will base it on when the most people could make it between you and the WWU team.

Hope you are having a good break! Let me know soon!

Spring Sailing Schedule

Sailing Team,

The spring schedule is now posted on the website, http://www.whatcomsailing.com/schedule.html.  A couple things to note: Our practices for all of spring will be Mondays and Wednesdays.  We will not be switching days halfway through to keep things simple.  We also have a couple of events we will be hosting at Lakewood: Mar 17th regatta hosted with the WWU sailing team and April 28/29 Team Race Districts. Team Race Districts will be a big event which we will want to do well, so we will need everyones help with this event.

Subject: good job team

Hey Team!
Great job this fall! You all did wonderfully. Seasoned sailors, good sailing and new sailors, fabulous job learning!
Sometime around late February or early March we'll have pre-spring-season meeting and start up practice again! The spring season is a slightly more serious season because it has the district competitions but it's still a ton of fun. Very nearly all the regattas in the spring are rotating team regattas like the last sail-sand point regatta, Casscadia Cup, so there's a lot of interaction with the team at regattas.
If any of you have any friends that might be interested in sailing, get them to come in the spring! We'll have a blast.
See you all in the spring!
Sail Fast and have fun,

Rose Bowl Regatta

Hello team,

Now that San Francisco is under our belt, we are getting ready for our next California regatta, Rose Bowl, January 7th and 8th in Long Beach, CA. Tickets are very cheap right now, so we would like to buy them ASAP.
Details (these might be a little vague, as it is a little early for concrete details yet)

Flight: We will be flying Allegiant out of Bellingham into Los Angeles. Right now, tickets would be about $150/person. We would leave on Friday, Jan 6 and return on Monday, Jan 9.

Transportation: We will have to rent a car for this regatta. We estimate that this will be about $45/person.

Lodging: We will stay with a family in the Long Beach area.

Entry fee: Last year the regatta entry fee was $22/person and included dinner on Saturday night. There is no NOR yet for this regatta, so that entry fee may be different.

Extra cost: Sailors will need to bring money for all other meals and a t-shirt, if they'd like.

All these costs are estimated. We estimate that this regatta will cost about $260 for everything.

Please let us know by noon on Wednesday, November 9 (tomorrow) if you are interested and able to come. We will be choosing sailors and buying tickets on Wednesday afternoon. We apologize for the last minute nature of this, but we would like to get tickets as cheap as possible.

Thank you! Please feel free to call either of us with any questions.

6th place robyn, elsa, jack
7th place miles, ben, zoe

Out of 25. Woohoo

Last race

Last race of the day miles and ben finish 2nd, robyn and jack 5th.

Miles and Zoe take 3rd in race 4

Miles and zoe get 3rd, robyn and jack were over early on the start so they finish deep.

Funny story

Robyn and jack were doing great, approaching the finish line in 2nd place.  Unfortunately the course was twice around.  So after a quick celebration and a talk with the oblivious coach, they were back to racing.  Ended up finishing around 10th.  Good lesson learned.

Rotation

Ben and elsa out, zoe and jack in.  Robyn and jack round weather mark in second.

Robyn and Elsa win first race

Robyn and Elsa won the first race, miles and ben finished mid fleet.  Exciting.

Starting

In sequence for first race of day

Heading out

Wind has filled slightly, race committee sending everyone out.  Starting off with robyn and elsa in bham 1 and miles and ben in bham 2.

Postponed

Currently postponed as we wait for wind to fill in.  The team enjoyed a nice ride across the bay this morning.  It was a fun way to travel to a regatta.  Winds expected to be light today.  They are planning on racing in richardson bay.

Skippers meeting

Motoring to the regatta.

Getting readying

Getting dressed before the boat ride across the bay.

Parents- Need Drivers

Hello Sailors and Parents,

We need drivers for this weekend! It is our last northwest regatta of the season, and it should be a great one! Team racing is an exciting and challenging sport, plus it's close to Halloween, so everyone will be dressed up! Should be a great regatta.

Right now, we have Scott and Shawn Buhler who can drive 7 kids back up on Sunday, but not down on Saturday. If anyone would only be able to come for Saturday, please let us know as we might be able to work something out with this! Other then that, we have no drivers! Let me know if you are able to drive.

Thank you!

McCurdy Cup and Announcements

Hello sailors,

First, announcements: This week is our last week of practice for all sailors. Next week will be practice for just those going to San Francisco.

Our last northwest regatta of the season is McCurdy Cup, Oct 29 and 30th at Seattle Yacht Club. This is a team race regatta in V15s. The entry fee is $30 and includes a dinner at SYC on Saturday night. Please bring food/money for lunch and breakfast. The following sailors are signed up:
Victoria
John
Elsa
Jay
Garrett
Cassie
Kara
Christian
Jack
Sawyer
Ben
Liam
Robyn
Miles
Riley A.
Zoe
Nick
Shannon
Elise

You must let us know by Wednesday if you are on the list and are not coming, or are not on the list and are coming. Since this is a team race regatta, one person deciding to drop out last minute will affect many other sailors.

Parents- please let us know if you can drive. Scott and I will be in Seattle already, so will not be able to bring sailors down to this regatta. We do not need to tow any boats for this regatta.

Thank you!

Mallory

FINAL RESULTS

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: 14 College and 9 High School sailing teams shared the
waters of Lake Washington in Seattle this past weekend. Racing got underway
Saturday morning at 10:15 in a light North breeze that died at the end of
race 2. After a short postponment, B-Division set sail in a patchy South
breeze. By the end of race 2B the forcasted southerly had filled in to a
solid 10-12 knots with lots of puffs and shifts. By 4:45 6 races had been
completed in each division.

Saturday evening sailors enjoyed a college sailing forum where NW High School
sailors were educated on college sailing and the local collegiate sailing
programs. The big message was that there are lots of programs out there
and there are lots of people willing to help you find the right program that
fits your academic and sailing goals.

Sunday morning sailors arrived to a calm Lake Washington. A South breeze
finally filled at 11:30 and the RC managed to get a single race in before the
wind shut off again. 30 minutes later B-Division hit the water in a shifty
5 knot southerly. They quickly completed two races and it was A-Division
out for the final race to even the series. RC struggled to get a fair race
completed recalling more than one race as wind shut off and shifted. A final
race was managed in a very light and unstable South breeze. And of course,
a perfect Northerly filled just as the last few boats were finishing the
final race!

All courses were Windward Leewards with 3 and 4 legs. One breakdown was
awarded. And a big thanks is on order for the wonderful Sand Point
parent volunteers who kept the HS sailors well fed all weekend.
Thanks to RC volunteers: Kim Zehnder (UW '04), Taylor Hubbard (UW '10),
Nino Johnson (UW '10), and Alex Jones (UW '06) for their work in challenging
conditions. Thanks to Kyle Eaton for running the college forum. And thanks
to Sail Sand Point and the University of Washington Sailing Teams for
hosting the Cascadia Cup once again.

Congratulations to UW for being the top College team. And Congratulations
to NK/Kingston HS for topping the High School fleet.

Cascadia Cup

Hello sailors,

Cascadia Cup is this weekend, Oct. 22nd and 23rd at Sail Sand Point in Seattle. This is a great regatta to attend, as both high school and college teams will be there. College teams will be happy to answer any questions about their schools and their sailing programs. Most likely, they will run high school sailors and college sailors on the same start, which is a good opportunity for more competition! Plus, you will get to race against Lily and Ryan. :) There will be a $25 entry fee- please bring exact change. This covers Sat and Sun lunch and Sun breakfast. Please bring extra money for dinner on Saturday night. We will be staying in a building at Magnuson Park with the rest of the high school sailors. Please bring a sleeping bag, pillow and pad. Please bring a bailer

Those signed up:
Jack
Christian
Kara
Mac
Sawyer
Ben
Liam
Garrett
Robyn
Miles
Riley A.
Zoe
Shannon
Nick
Amy
Elise

Please let us know ASAP if you are on the list and can't make it, or if you aren't on the list and would like to come. As mentioned before, we know this is homecoming weekend for many of you. We are okay with you leaving on Saturday afternoon and returning Sunday morning. Please let us know if you plan on doing this so we can plan accordingly.

Parents- please let us know if you can drive! Let us know if you have a vehicle that can tow or trailers available to use. Thank you!

San Francisco and BYC Letters

First off, the team going to San Francisco in a few weeks will be Robyn, Elsa, Zoe, Jack, Miles, and Ben.  For those who did not get selected there will be more travel opportunities this winter, so please keep showing your interest.

Also, a few parents have asked about letters received recently from the BYC.  To clarify, none of the team fees you paid this September went towards a BYC youth membership, so if you would like a membership with them you are your own to get that.  In the past years we had part of the team fees go to the BYC for insurance and a youth membership, but as of this summer Whatcom Sailing has its own insurance, so that money goes to our program to pay for insurance. We are working on a relationship with the BYC for future years hoping to get members of our team a discounted membership and access to BYC boats.  We will keep you posted as things get worked out.  But for now, any BYC youth memberships you want are up to you and not a requirement for being on the team.  If you have any questions please let us know.

Octoberfest

September 24 & 25, 2011 Sail Sand Point, Seattle, WA

Another beautiful weekend filled with the full spectrum of wind and weather! Saturday was a hot, sunny day with light breeze. Sunday brought stormy, gusty, rain filled clouds cruising over Lake Washington. Winds ranged from 12-18 mph, with gusts up to 31 mph. Our sailors did awesome- they were still racing competitively in such high breeze! Riley and Ben placed first in the FJ fleet. Robyn placed 2nd in the Northwest Youth Race Circuit, which totals all results from a total of 7 races throughout the summer. Full results have not been posted yet, but we will send those out as soon as we receive them. Good job Whatcom sailors!!

Being towed in on Saturday

Sunday brought better wind...notice carnage in the background as Liam hikes through it

Sailing, San Francisco, Fundraising

Another great job by everyone this weekend in another windy regatta.  Winds yesterday were a steady 15+ mph with gusts as high as 30!  A special congratulations to Robyn who finished 2nd overall in the Northwest Youth Circuit Laser Radial season standings.  We will be posting pictures soon to the blog on our website www.whatcomsailing.com.

We have 2 weekends off from racing before we head back down to Seattle for Cascadia Cup and McCurdy cup.  After that we would like to send some of our varsity sailors to San Francisco to race with some of the top programs in the country.  The regatta we would be attending is held at the San Francisco Yacht Club on November 5th and 6th.  We would leave on Friday Nov 4th and return Monday the 7th.  Preliminary costs look to be around $250-300/per sailor.  We would like to purchase tickets and get everything arranged by the end of the week.  Please discuss with your parents and let us know by the end of the week if you would like to go and can for sure go.  If you have any questions about how an event like this typically works please give us a call and we can chat.

Fundraising Committee - We would like to set up a parent fundraising committee to help us raise money for the program.  If you are interested in helping with this please let us know.  We will have a meeting shortly to discuss potential fundraising opportunities.

Thanks, see you at practice tomorrow!

DJOD

September 17 & 18, 2011 Bellingham Yacht Club, Bellingham, WA

What a wonderful weekend of sailing in all wind conditions! Saturday was a very windy, wavy, challenging day and the team did great! It's getting out in those crazy conditions and surviving that builds your sailing ability quickly! Sailors came off the water soaking wet and exhausted, but with a smile on their faces. Sunday was met with much calmer seas, and near the end of the day, some light wind racing. In the FJ fleet, Robyn and Elsa placed 3rd and Miles and Elise placed 2nd, both going home with some neat prizes! Full results divided by fleet can be found here: http://sailfleet.byc.org/2011/09/17/dale-jepsen-one-design-regatta/ More pictures can be found here: http://janpix.smugmug.com/Boats/2011-DJOD-Regatta/19086649_mwFqmt#1485171752_TLVxpdQ target= and here: https://picasaweb.google.com/104803912432940640237/2011DaleJepsenOneDesignRegatta?authuser=0&feat=directlink
