Drivers: Knowles 3, Suwarno 4, West 2, Hood 4, Serbousek 3, Nienabor 3, Powell 3, Weston 4

Ferry reservations - Please make ferry reservations for the 7:30am Anacortes to Orcas ferry on Saturday morning.  Also make reservations on the 5:15 return sailing Sunday evening.  I highly recommend making these reservations ASAP.  If you don't get a reservation more come available at 7:00am 2 days before the sailing date.

We are likely staying at the hanger again.  Lera is going to confirm its available.  Either way you will need your typical sleeping gear for sleeping on a floor.  However, since there are so many of us going this weekend, please don't bring large inflatable beds or there will not be room for everyone.

Entry fee is $25 per sailor.  Fee includes lunch and dinner on Sat as well as breakfast and lunch on Sunday. NOR and Waiver attached.  Please bring Saturday morning.

Costumes - The costume competition will happen again and we must defend our win last year. We will go over teams tomorrow at practice.  Be thinking of a good costume for your team.

Fundraiser Tomorrow

Sailors,

We have an opportunity to make some money for the team tomorrow.  My parents have offered a generous donation if we go over and do some yard work at their house tomorrow.  So please come if you can to 2120 North Shore Dr. tomorrow after school for a couple hours of work.  Bring shovels and rakes if you have them.  Also wear some clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Remember fundraisers are a mandatory part of the team, we don't do a lot of them, so please show up.

Thanks,

Pre-season Meeting Recap

Hello Sailors and Parents,

We had our pre-season meeting on Monday night - thank you to all who came! Here is a recap for everyone:

{You can find all the forms and most of the information at whatcomsailing.com}

ABOUT
All local high school sailing is organized and managed by Whatcom Sailing.  We focus on racing, not learning how to sail. The high school sailing team is a recognized club sport at each school and we treat it the same as any school sport. Therefore, the expectations are the same regarding attendance at practices and races as any sport. Practices and regattas are required except for the that are indicated as Optional on the schedule. Everyone is expected to work together as team, including helping your peers, traveling together, staying together, and competing together. All three high schools practice and compete together in most regattas.

Other sailing or sports:  Sometimes kids try to juggle multiple sports or other sailing opportunities while being on the sailing team.  This is not recommended, but just understand that if you miss practices or regattas, that will be taken into consideration when deciding things like who races with who, who can go to regattas, etc.  We have to reward those who are committed to the team.

Unlike summer youth circuit racing, all the organization and registration for regattas is done by Whatcom Sailing.  This way the students can focus on school and not have to worry about planning for the next regatta.

EMAIL
Most all our communication is done via email, so please help us out by responding to emails quickly and make sure we have your current email address (students and parents).

FORMS
All sailors must fill out the forms attached, meet their school athletic requirements, and submit team fees. All forms must be filled out and turned in before our first practice. Team fees are $250; make check out to Whatcom Community Sailing

As a club sport, each sailor is required to comply with the schools' athletic eligibility requirements. Sailors can register online at your schools website as an athlete. This registration includes a Physical Form, Concussion Form and ASB Card. These items get turned into your school AD secretary. If you have not already scheduled a physical, do so ASAP so you can practice on Thursday. Go in to your athletic director secretary this week to verify that you have met all the school requirements.

PRACTICES
Our first practice is Tuesday, Aug 30. We will practice Tues/Thurs 3:15 - 6:30 through October 27. We will be conducting a swim test of ALL sailors at the first practice. Please bring a wetsuit, towel and warm clothes. PARENTS - Please help us by scheduling dentist and doctors appointments around our regular practices. Practices are held at Lakewood. If you need a carpool, please contact us and we will put you in touch with another sailor from your school.

We require all sailors to have a Type III Coastguard approved life jacket, a whistle attached to your life jacket and a wetsuit. There will be days where we will require a wetsuit or you won't be able to sail. We strongly encourage proper gear, such as gloves, booties and no cotton. On our gear page on the website, we suggest places to buy gear and what kind of gear to get. (westcoastsailing.com offers high school students 15% off gear and free shipping, just enter code ISSA) Please ask us or your fellow sailors what gear we recommend if you have any questions.

8TH GRADERS
Please arrive at practice as soon as possible after school gets out. 8th graders can participate in all regattas on the schedule with the exception of district championships or national events if we qualify.  However, even at district championship events there are typically JV fleets that are open to 8th graders.

SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
We follow the same requirements as the high schools for athletes.  This means that students must attend all classes the day of a practice AND must be passing all classes.  If either of these are failed then you may not practice.

REGATTAS
Please see the website for a schedule of all regattas.  www.whatcomsailing.com

REGATTA SIGN-UP - Please fill out this regatta sign up form so we know which events you absolutely cannot make. We expect you to attend all required regattas, so if you can not make a regatta please come talk to us so we can discuss why. Parents, please indicate which regattas you can drive to.

MONDAY/WED WORKOUTS
Monday and Wednesday we will meet after school at the Hoods house to workout.  These workouts are not mandatory like practices. Mondays will generally be running workouts, and Wednesdays will be strength training. Workouts are slightly weather dependent, so if it is a miserable Monday, we will resort to the weight room. Respond to either Shea or Nick if you will be attending the workouts so we don't leave without you!

First workout is Wed Aug 31. Respond to the captains Hannah (360-920-9518) or Mallory (360-220-2104) with questions about the workouts.

TEXT MESSAGING NOTIFICATIONS
We use a text message notification system for all the sailors. The messaging service is called Remind. To sign up send a text message
TO: 81010
Message: @sailboats

If you are a high schooler, we would like you to be on an additional list so please send another message
TO:81010
Message: @bhssailing   (if you go to BELLINGHAM)
or      @shssailing   (if you go to SEHOME)
or      @sqhssail      (if you go to SQUALICUM)

PARENTS
We are excited to have your sailor on the team, and will be kept very busy organizing practices & regattas, and teaching them how to become awesome racers! So, we will need your help! Regatta travel is usually based on parent drivers. We try to reimburse for gas, and food in usually free for parents or very cheap. Please take a look at the regatta schedule and make note on which regattas you would be able to drive.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email or visit the website for information. I am excited to be starting another season of sailing!

See you on the water!

High School Sailing Team Pre-Season Meeting

Sailors and Parents,

On Monday, Aug 22th, we will have our High School Sailing Pre-Season meeting, 6pm @ The Bellingham Yacht Club in the downstairs room.  This meeting is for both parents and students who plan to be on the team or are interested in learning more about it.  The team is open to all high schoolers and 8th graders in Whatcom County. We have many important topics to cover at the meeting including practice and regatta schedules, expectations, and required paperwork. It will also be a good meeting to attend for new sailors interested in joining the team, so encourage anyone who might be interested to come.

Practice and Regatta schedule for the season are posted on the website: http://www.whatcomsailing.com/schedule.html

Practice starts Thursday Aug 30th @ 3:15 at Lakewood.

FORMS / WAIVERS
Attached are the forms and waivers that each sailor, new or returning, needs to fill out.  Please complete these forms and bring to the meeting along with team dues which are $250 for both fall and spring seasons. Make check payable to Whatcom Community Sailing.

ALSO, all high schoolers (not 8th grade) sailors must do the required sports clearance with your school.  This is an online process now at your schools website.  Please read the attached Fall Sports Info document for details on this process.  A sports physical is also required, so get that scheduled ASAP.

All this paperwork is required before you can practice. For a list of everything that is required see the Join Page of our website.

We will go over all this in more detail at the meeting, but feel free to contact me if you have questions!

End of Year Party - REVISED DATE

Sailors and Parents,

There were some conflicts with our date for the end of year party so it is being moved to WEDNESDAY JUNE 22ND, 6:00PM.  Everything else is still the same.  Sorry for the confusion and changes.

We are going to do it at Shea's house this year, address is 1112 Austin st. Please use the link below to sign up for bringing food. If you could also put how many family members you are bringing on the right hand column of the sheet, that would be very helpful! The party will be outside, although under cover, so dress accordingly. See you then!

I hope everyone can attend, both sailors and parents please!.  Anyone that was part of the team either spring or fall should come. It will be a potluck like last year, so everyone should bring something.  I have created a sign up sheet online, just click on this link: POTLUCK SIGN UP  Everyone please fill out your name and what you plan to bring.

See you then!

Come Watch Nationals

Everyone is welcome and should come down and watch racing this weekend and cheer on the Sehome varsity team.  The regatta is at Seafarers memorial park all weekend.  There will be great viewing from the park, pier, or the top of the hill overlooking the course.  It will be great team racing, so come watch and learn how its done.

If you can't make it you can follow scores at scores.hssailing.org.

Practice / Weekend Drivers

For tomorrows practice we are meeting at Lake Padden back by the grass fields.  Come ready to play a game with athletic attire.  If you need help getting there ask Shea.

This weekend I still need drivers.  I also need someone who is able to tow.  I would  recommend coming this weekend since it is team racing which is more fun to watch and it is supposed to be sunny.  Let me know if you can join us.

SSP Team Race

NOR and Waiver are attached. Entry fee is $15.  Lunch will be provided both days.

Drivers are needed: Let me know if you can.

Schedule:
7:30am - Meet at Sehome Haggens

Districts HELP NEEDED

Parents,

Three big requests for next weekends District Championship.

1.  It is our team's responsibility to house other teams just like they do for us when we go to their venues. Districts is a big regatta so we need as many people as possible to help host teams. All you need is floor space for them to sleep on and a bathroom. Some teams need housing on Friday and Saturday night, and some only need it Saturday. Please email Shea if you are able to host a team, or with any questions you have. Thank you!

2. I will need help with running the races.  Any parents you are willing to be on a boat and help move marks over the weekend please let me know.

3. Food help.  Andrea Hood and Teresa Werner and others are organizing food for the regatta.  They will need a lot of help also.  Please email Andrea if you can help with food. a.kivi.hood@gmail.com

This is a big event that requires help from everyone, so please try to volunteer with one of the options above.

Thanks,
Scott Wilson

Re: Bainbridge Team Race

Nevermind, we have enough drivers.  Take Maia and Lauren off the list and Cole G has his own transportation down and back.
