Pumpkin Bowl

Sailors,

First of all, great job to everyone this weekend at Cascadia Cup.  Everyone did great.  Results are at nwisa.hssailing.org.

Next weekend is Pumpkin Bowl.  This regatta is up at West Vancouver Yacht Club in BC.  This regatta is optional and only for those who want to try something new.  I have heard from Miles and Riley who plan to sail their 29er, and Jeffrey and Liam who would like to sail a 420.  I was able to get us four 420 charters, so we have room for 6 more sailors if you would like to race.  The 420 is a fun boat that can be sailed with a spinnaker or without.  The downside to this regatta is the cost.  The entry fee is $100 canadian and the charter fee is also $100.  Fees include lunch on Saturday and Sunday, Saturday dinner for competitors and a regatta t-shirt.

If you would like to go please email me by tomorrow at 4pm.  I need to let them know if we will take the charters or not.

Thanks,

Scott Wilson

Congrats to Lily and Robyn!

Sailors, Parents, Alumni and Friends,

I am very excited to announce that both Lily Grimshaw and Robyn Lesh, past Sehome High School sailors, have each qualified for the College Sailing ICSA Singlehanded National Championships.  Robyn and Lily and 16 other girls from around the country will race against each other in Newport Rhode Island November 8-10.  Lily Grimshaw, a senior sailing for the University of Washington, qualified by winning the Northwest Singlehanded District Championship a few weeks ago in Bellingham.  Robyn Lesh, a sophomore sailing for MIT, qualified this past weekend by placing 6th in the New England District Championships in Boston. Both are studying engineering. Good luck to both of them at Nationals!!

Octoberfest this Weekend

This weekend is Octoberfest.  We have almost everyone going this weekend: Liam H, Elise, Mallory, Sophia, Nick, Shea, Courtney, Liam M, Benj, Chase, Ali, Zach, Ben, Lexy, Riley, Will, Jack, Ondrea, Jeffrey, Ian (Sat), Maia, Jacob, Johnny, Sawyer.

I will assume everyone wants to sail in the FJ fleet unless you tell me otherwise.  Lasers are also an option.

We will be leaving early Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening.  Meet at the Sehome Haggens parking lot at 7:00am Saturday morning. We will likely return to Bellingham around 7pm Sunday evening. The cost for the weekend is $30 and additional meals are available for family members to purchase ($5 for lunch and $10 for dinner). You can bring cash or check for the entry fee.  Checks made out to SAIL SAND POINT. The cost includes lunches both days and dinner Saturday night.  We will be staying the night down in Seattle, at Liams Grandpas house. Bring sleeping bag, pillow and pad.  Also bring some cash for stopping at Safeway on Sunday morning for breakfast.  And, attached is a registration form and waiver for the regatta.  It would be very helpful if everyone filled this out and brought it with you saturday morning.

PARENT: We will need parents to drive, so let me know if you can, and how many kids could fit in your car. Parents are welcome to sleep with the team also, but it may mean sleeping on the floor as well.

Pre-Season Meeting Recap

Hello Sailors and Parents,

We had our pre-season meeting on Monday night- thank you to all who came! Here is a recap for everyone: (you can find all the forms and most of the information at www.whatcomsailing.com )
ABOUT
The high school sailing team is a club sport at each school and therefore we treat it the same as any school sport.  Therefore, the expectations are the same regarding attendance at practices, races, and fundraisers.  Everyone on the team is expected to work together as a team, this includes helping your peers, traveling together, staying together, and competing together.  All three high schools practice and compete together in most regattas.

EMAIL
Most all our communication is done via email, so please help us out by responding to emails quickly and make sure we have your current email address.

FORMS
All sailors must fill out the forms and checks outlined in the sailor packet attached.  All forms must be filled out and turned in before our first practice. Returning sailors need to show proof of a current WWUAA Alumni Card. Team fees are $200 check out to Whatcom Community Sailing and the $35 check out to WWUAA (unless you are returning and have renewed online).

As a club sport each sailor is required to comply with the schools athletic eligibility requirements. Sailors can pick up a packet from their schools athletic department.  This includes a Physical Form, Eligibiliy Packet, Concussion Form and ASB Card.  These items get turned into your school AD secretary.  If you have not already scheduled a physical do so ASAP so you can practice next Tuesday. Go in to your athletic director secretary this week to verify that you have met all the school requirements.

PRATICES
Our first practice is Tuesday Sep 3rd. We will practice Tues/Thurs 3:15-6:30 till the end of Oct.  We will be conducting a swim test for all new sailors at the first practice. Please bring a wetsuit, towel and warm clothes.  PARENTS- Please help us by scheduling dentist and doctors appointments around our regular practices.  Practices are held at Lakewood. If you need a carpool, please contact us and we will put you in touch with another sailor from your school.

We require all sailors to have a Type III Coastguard approved lifejacket, a whistle attached to the life jacket and a wetsuit. There will be days where we will require a wetsuit or you won't be able to sail. We strongly encourage proper gear, such as gloves, booties, and no cotton. On our gear page on the website, we suggest places to buy gear and what kind of gear to get. (Westcoast sailing offers high school students 15% off gear, and free shipping). Please ask us or your fellow sailors what gear we recommend if you have any questions.

8TH GRADERS
Please arrive at practice as soon as possible after school gets out.  8th graders can participate in all regattas on the schedule with the exception of district championships or national events if we qualify.

REGATTAS
Please see our website for a schedule of all regattas.

REGATTA SIGN UP - Please fill out this regatta sign up form so we know which events you absolutely can not make.  We expect you to attend all required regattas, so if you can not make a regatta please come talk to us so we can discuss why.

PARENTS
We are excited to have your sailor on the team, and will be kept very busy organizing practices, regattas and teaching them how to become awesome racers! So, we will need your help! Regatta travel is usually based on parent drivers. We try to reimburse for gas, and food is usually free for parents or very cheap.  Please take a look at the regatta schedule and make note on which regattas you would be able to drive.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us or visit our website for information. We are excited to be starting another season of sailing! See you on the water!

Fundraiser and Regatta RSVP SOON

Sailors,

It turns out Aug 18th was a bad day to have the fundraiser, no one could make it.  So lets plan another day.  This time you tell me when you can make it.  Here is a quick online poll I would like all of you to take and tell me the days that you for sure could attend the fundraiser.  Please respond soon so we can get the word out.

Also, there are still FJs available to borrow for this weekends regatta.  Some of you who are not already registered should consider pairing up and racing an FJ.  If you would like to sail but don't have a partner let me know and I will help you find one.

End of Year Party + Races + Shirts

Sailors and Parents,

END OF YEAR PARTY

Our end of the year party will be Sunday June 9th at 5:00pm.  The Dye's have offered to host.  Their address is 2593 Lummi View Dr.

I hope everyone can attend, both sailors and parents.  It will be a potluck like last year, so if everyone could bring something that would be great.  I have created a sign up sheet online, just click on this link: POTLUCK SIGN UP  All you have to do is fill out your name and what you will bring.

Also bring any games you have that would be fun for everyone.

Here are directions to the Dye's house:

From 1-5 head west on Slater Rd (Exit 260 ).  Drive to Haxton Way (there will be a light and the Silver Reef Casino Grounds).  Turn Left.  You will stay on this road until you get to the house, it will turn into Lummi View Drive as you get close to the water.  The speed limit will start at 35 mph, then up to 50 mph, then down to 35 mph (you are close!).  When the speed limit drops to 25 mph, start looking for the house, it is on the right side of the street.  We have a blue sailboat welcome flag out front.  The house numbers are clearly marked.  Extra parking across the street is just fine, just not this the Century Link parking lot.

Call Felicity if you get lost: 815-3199

RACES

There are two regattas this weekend which you should attend.  First one is a WWU Alumni and Friends regatta out at Lakewood.  This is always a fun event that Mallory and I attend.  There will be informal racing, raffles, prizes, etc.  Racing is relaxed and informal, so don't come expecting serious racing.  They are giving high school kids a special price of $10 per person.  A bbq lunch will be provided. So find a crew and come race with us.   Be at lakewood at 9am.

The second regatta is a scow youth regatta on Sunday.  This one is $5, no lunch provided.  Very fun regatta with many kids from our team.  Notify John Holland (360) 927-2627) if you plan to race.  Attached are NOR and liability waivers.

PATAGONIA SHIRTS

The Patagonia shirts are here and they look awesome.  You can swing by my house whenever to pay for them and pick up your shirt.  Just call or text me first to make sure I am home.  I will also bring them to the party.

Our Patagonia shirts have arrived and they look very nice.  I brought them to the screen printer yesterday and he is hoping to have them done before practice tomorrow.  Hopefully he gets them done in time so I can bring them to practice.  Bring $35 to practice tomorrow assuming they will be ready.  If they are not done by tomorrow you can either come by our house and pick up your shirts or at our end of year party.  More info on that party coming soon.

Districts / Patagonia Shirts

Sailors / Parents,

First of all, thank you very much to all the parents who helped this last weekend with Food, Race Committee, Housing, etc.  Our team does a great job hosting events and all the other coaches and parents were very impressed.  The dessert was especially good!  Special thanks to Andrea Hood for organizing all the food this year.  And to the race committee who were out all day in the cold rainy weather of last Saturday.

This coming weekend is team race districts.  The Sehome team will be going, Jack, Lisa, Elsa, Elise, Miles, Liam H, Jeffrey, and Liam D and trying to qualify for nationals.  Entry fee is $15 for food,  which covers lunch and snacks both days.  Breakfast both days, and dinner Saturday night is NOT provided so bring extra money for those meals. Also please sign and bring the waiver attached.

Patagonia Shirts

The team has decided to purchase team shirts from Patagonia.  The shirts are Patagonia Capilene 3 base layer shirts.  Good as a first layer to keep you warm.  Or as the only layer on a nice day like today.  We will get them screen printed with the logo designed by Elsa.  The shirts will be 30-35 dollars each.  I will charge exactly what they cost to make.  Attached is pictures of what they look like.  Mens are the darker blue, womens the lighter blue.  They have them down at REI if you would like to try them on first.  If you would like one, send me your order by next Monday the 6th.  I will order on Tuesday and I am only going to order exactly what is requested, no extras, so make sure you let me know by Monday.

Sailing Team - Important Info

Parents / Sailors,

Lots of important info in this email, so please read and respond.

SILVERDALE REGATTA TOMORROW

We have drivers Scott 1(4), Scott 2 (6), Mallory (4), Magnus (4), and Chris (4).  Entry fee is $5.  See you at 5:45 tomorrow morning, please be on time or we will leave without you.  And bring the attached waiver signed.

PORTLAND REGATTA NEXT WEEKEND

Next weekend is a regatta in Portland.  All sailors please let me know if you would like to go or not.  Email me either way by tonight.

FLEET DISTRICTS PLANNING MEETING

This coming Monday at 6pm we will be having a parent meeting to plan the fleet race district champs we are hosting in 2 weeks.  We will meet at my house 720 11th St. #B2.  We will discuss race committee, food, and housing.  Please plan on coming if you can help out in any way.

HOUSING FOR DISTRICTS

We need to provide housing for about 15 teams in two weeks for the district champs we are hosting. The teams will be smaller, 4-8 kids per team, and all they need is a floor to crash on and a place to shower. If you have couches or beds, even better.  Most will need housing Friday and Saturday nights.  Nothing else is required of you except a place for them to sleep and bathroom/shower.  Let me know if you are willing to host a team.

Thanks,

This coming weekend we are heading down to Silverdale for a one day regatta.  We need to be there around 8:30 which means we should take the 7:50 edmonds ferry.  So lets plan on meeting at Sehome Haggens bright and early at 5:45 Saturday morning.  Racing will go to 5, so we should be back in bellingham around 8 ish.

Entry fee is $5 dollars which gives you lunch.  You should plan on packing your own breakfast Saturday morning and some extra cash for snacks/dinner Saturday on our way back.  We will not stop, but you can buy something on the ferry or while we are waiting for the ferry.  If we need to rent a van I will add $5 to the entry fee.  Also, if you write a check, please make the check out to Whatcom Community Sailing and not me.

SAILORS: I will assume everyone wants to go this weekend unless I hear from you, so please email me if you can't go.

PARENTS: We will need drivers for this weekend, please let me know if you can drive and how many you can hold.

Attached is the waiver for you to sign bring Saturday.

Island Cup / Exchange Student

Parents, and Sailors,

Island Cup is April 6 and 7 this year on San Juan Island, racing will be at Roche Harbor.  We will be leaving Friday afternoon around 1pm and returning late Sunday evening.  Sailors I have heard want to go: Lisa, John, Jack, Larry, Lexy, Shea B, Jeffrey, Sawyer, Freeman, Ondrea, Miles, Ali, Elsa, Riley, Liam, Elise, Victoria. Let me know if this is incorrect.

Parents: let me know soon if you can drive and how many.

Also there is a German exchange student who is looking for a sailing family for next year.  Her name is Fanny and she is Max's sister. (Max, the exchange student from the Bainbridge Island team).  She apparently is a really good sailor, and is on the German National Sailing Team.  She is 15, from Berlin, and apparently very nice.  Her brother Max is a very nice guy, so im sure she is as well.  I think it would be a lot of fun if we found a home for her here in Bellingham, so let me know if you would be interested or know someone who would be.

Thanks,

2v2 Anacortes Team Race

This weekend we are heading down to Anacortes for a one day team race regatta.  We will meet at the Sehome Haggens at 8 am Saturday morning.  There is a $5 dollar entry fee per person.  Entry fee covers breakfast and lunch.  I would suggest bringing water and snacks also.  NOR says racing will continue until late, weather and daylight permitting.  So my guess is racing till 4 or 5, then loading all our boats and back to Bellingham between 6 and 7.

Parents, we could still use some drivers, so please let me know if you would be willing to drive down and back.

Thanks,

SSP Regatta Details

Sailors and Parents,

This weekends regatta is a two day event. We will be meeting at the Sehome Haggen's parking lot at 7:00AM Saturday morning and driving down to Seattle.  Racing will go till around 5 and then we will get food and head over to Liam Hood's grandpas house for the night.  Sunday we will race till 3, pack up and head home.  Probably back by 7pm.

Entry fee this weekend is $15.  Entry fee includes lunches and snacks both days.  Parents can purchase meal tickets for $5.  If we rent a van it will be an extra $5.

The entire team would like to go this weekend.  Which is awesome, but also presents some challenges.  First driving, we will need many cars to get everyone down this weekend.  Please let me know if you can drive.  If we don't get enough vehicles driving I will rent a van and charge and extra $5 per sailor.

Second, housing will be cramped.  We will likely be splitting up the girls and boys this weekend so there is enough room for everyone.  Steve Hood is checking with his Dad about having the girls stay upstairs and boys downstairs.  If that doesn't work I have another option.

Third, we have been allocated 1 sehome gold team (4 sailors), 1/2 sehome gold team (2 sailors), 1 bellingham gold team (4 sailors), and 1 squalicum silver team (4) sailors.  Which would mean we would be rotating 10 sailors.  This will result in everyone getting to sail only a few  races this weekend.  The goal of this weekend is to create a more competitive gold fleet, so rotating beginners into our gold fleet team doesn't make much sense.  I am still working on getting another boat, but if I can't I will ask some of you to stay home this weekend.  As you know I hate to turn anyone away, but we keep growing as a team and it just makes sense this weekend.  Sailors that get cut from this weekends regatta will have priority next weekend.  I will let everyone know the cuts after Thursdays practice.  Please be understanding if you get cut from this weekend.

Right now, we have Steve Hood, Felicity Dye, and myself driving.  Parents please let me know if you could drive also.  And if you could tow boats.

Thanks,

Scott Wilson

Sailing

Another great weekend of racing.  Sehome 1 placed 2nd, Bellingham 6th, Sehome 2 7th, and Squalicum 12th.  Sehome and Bellingham both qualified for gold fleet next weekend.  Thanks the Andrea Hood for helping with food along with Felicity Dye for making pasta.  And thanks to all the sailors who help organize loading and unloading of all the boats.  Weekend results here nwisa.hssailing.org.

Next weekend we are off to Seattle and Sail Sand Point for a 2 day regatta.  Leave Saturday morning, return Sunday evening. Details will come soon.

Great regatta!

Great first regatta yesterday!  Everyone sailed very well.  Congrats to our Sehome team of Jack, Jeffrey, Liam and Elise for placing 2nd overall out of 26 teams.  Bellingham placed 14th overall and our combined team with Orcas placed 12th.  It was tough conditions as usual with all the puffs and large wind shifts to manage.  The Sehome team sailed very consistently and proved they will be tough to beat this year.  Here are results: http://nwisa.hssailing.org/documents/2012-2013-results/2013_HS_KO_Results.pdf

Thanks to the parents who drove.   If you left your gear in a car it will be brought to practice on Tuesday.

Next Saturday our regatta is here in town out at the lake.

See you Tuesday.

Also, I need some parent drivers for this weekend.  Please let me know if you can drive and also if your vehicle can tow boats.

Also, many of you (mostly returning sailors) still need to turn in consent waivers and clear with your school for eligibility.  Do this by Thursday.

Hello Sailors and Parents,

We had our pre-season meeting on Monday night- thank you to all who came! Here is a recap for everyone: (you can find all the forms and most of the information at www.whatcomsailing.com )

EMAIL
Most all our communication is done via email, so please help us out by responding to emails quickly and make sure we have your current email address.

FORMS
All sailors must fill out the forms and checks outlined in the sailor packets attached.  New Sailors must fill out all forms, Returning Sailors need only to fill out the new consent waiver and verify athletic eligibility with their schools. New sailors that did not participate in the fall also must pay the team fees: Make $150 check out to Whatcom Community Sailing and the $35 check out to WWUAA

As a club sport each sailor is required to comply with the schools athletic eligibility requirements.  Sailors can pick up a packet from their schools athletic department.  This includes a Physical Form.  If you have not already scheduled a physical do so ASAP so you can practice next Tuesday.
Bring these forms with you to the first practice if you have not turned them in already. (or you won't be able to sail!)  Athletic eligibility packet gets returned to your school AD secretary.

PRATICES
Our first practice is Tuesday Feb 26th. We will practice Tues/Thurs 3:15-6:30 till the end of May.

We will be more strict this year about going to regattas (and practices). We won't be accepting 'I have homework' or 'I have a big test' as an excuse. You know all the regattas we plan on attending now, so plan accordingly.

REGATTA SIGN UP - Please fill out this regatta sign up form so we know which events you absolutely can not make.  We expect you to attend all regattas, so if you can not make a regatta please come talk to us so we can discuss why.

Physical and Atheltic Packet

Just a reminder that our first practice is in two weeks and everyone must have a physical form completed and athletics packet turned before that practice.  Since this has not been a normal requirement I don't want you to forget.  See your athletic director for these forms.

Also don't forget about our Pre-Season meeting next Monday, 6pm at Lakewood!

See you then,

Sailing Team - Pre-Season Meeting

Sailors and Parents,

Our pre-season meeting will be Monday Feb 18th at 6pm at the Lakewood Lounge.  This meeting is for both sailors and parents, so both please plan on attending.

We have many important topics to cover including practice and regatta schedules and hosting of a couple regattas this spring.  Please bring copies of your personal calendars so we can make some plans. It will also be a good meeting to attend for new sailors interested in joining the team.  Please pass on this email to anyone you think might want to join.

Practice and Regatta schedule are posted on the website: http://www.whatcomsailing.com/schedule.html

Practice starts Tuesday Feb 26th and our first regatta is March 2nd in Seattle.

Attached are packets for new sailors and returning sailors.  Please fill out the forms in your packet and bring them to the pre-season meeting.  IN ADDITION, all sailors new or returning must pick up an athletic packet from your school, fill it out, and return it to your school.  Everyone must complete this athletic packet and get a physical before the first practice, so please take care of that ASAP.  There are only a handful of you who have done this, so please check with you athletic director to find out your status.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions!  See you soo,
