Rose Bowl Regatta

Sailors & Parents,

We have the opportunity to go to the Rose Bowl regatta in Long Beach CA this year, so I am planning on taking a team of 4-6 sailors.  The regatta is Jan 2-3, but we will fly out Friday the 1st and come back Monday the 4th.  We will stay at a house down in Long Beach.

I have taken the team to this regatta a few times in the past.  It is a big event that is very competitive.  We will be racing against really good California teams.  There is also a college event running simultaneously, and the colleges give a talk on Saturday night so it is a good time for the upperclassmen to learn about schools and talk to coaches.

The cost will likely be 400-600 per person.

When choosing who goes to events like this I decide based on four things:

Team Dedication:  Practice and regatta attendance, fundraiser participation, boat loading, etc
Skill: Who would benefit the most from sailing in a competitive fleet?
Seniority:  Are you a freshman or senior?
Responsibility: If I leave you in LA are you going to huddle in a corner and cry or deal with it. Don't worry, I haven't left anyone yet! :)

So please let me know if you would like to be considered.  It's ok if you are from different schools. Unfortunately since this event is less than a month away I need to register and book flights ASAP.  So please let me know if you would like to go by NOON TOMORROW.

Call or email if you need more details,

Sailors,

Tuesday rules talks are starting up again.  The first one will be in one week on Tuesday Dec 1.  Talks will be from 6-8pm every Tuesday at the BYC in the Ward Room downstairs.

Last year these talks were a big hit.  The talks are more of an organized discussion rather than a lecture.  Each week we focus on one or two rules and look at the basics, definitions that apply, cases, team racing calls, and how you can apply the rule tactically.  We take turns presenting, but everyone contributes.

These talks are good for all ages, kids to adults.  It''s especially good for those who wish to become more advanced racers.  If you are actively racing in high school, college, phrf, Etchells, 505s, Lasers or Scows, these talks are for you!

See you then.

Rules Talks

Let me try that again as it is apparent that I did a bad job with my first email.  The rules talks will start next week, December 1, Tuesday at 6pm.  The talks will go from 6pm to 8pm.  Talks will be every Tuesday unless there is a holiday conflict or we decide to take a week off.  They will go until we decide we have had enough, probably into Feb.  Talks will be at the BYC downstairs in the ward room.  Everyone is welcome, parents, sailors, of all ages and skill and rules knowledge.

Rules Talks

Rules Talks will start in one week. 6pm at the BYC downstairs. These talks are for everyone, all sailors in Bellingham and parents interested in learning the rules.  Last year these talks were very valuable and those that came learned a lot.  We cover the basics and advanced concepts, so good for everyone.

See you next week.

Rules Talks
Last winters rules talks were a huge success so we are planning to do them again.  The talks are once per week for around 2 hours.  Each night we discuss a new rule and everyone takes turn presenting on that rule.  Its been requested that we start sooner so we have time to get to all the rules.  So the first talk will be the week of Nov 9-14th.  But we need to find the night that works best for everyone.  Here is a short survey that I would like everyone to take so we can find that best night: http://goo.gl/forms/8V8j8mJxBq  This rules talk is for everyone, including parents, so everyone should fill out the survey.

Orcas - Saturday Morning

We will be taking the 7:30 ferry to Orcas Saturday morning.  If you are driving, please make reservations for your car. The final drivers are: Tom, Kathleen, John, Kathy, Scott, Leonard, and Jeff.   On the way back, make reservations for the 5:15 ferry.  If reservations spots are not available, another block will become available two days before the crossing.  So tomorrow morning for Saturday, and Friday morning for Sunday at 7 AM.

We will meet at the Sehome haggens at 6:00am Saturday morning.  DON'T BE LATE.

Sailors: Bring $7 for your cars ferry fee.

Once last check: If anyone is driving to Seattle tonight or tomorrow and can tow an empty trailer let me know, this would save us from having to bring 3 extra boats this weekend.

This weekend we are heading to Orcas for a team race regatta.  All three teams can go, so the final list going will be: Liam, Nick, Jacob F, Hannah, Benj, Shea, Quinn, Peyton, Mallory, Lera, Hailey, Chase, Maia, Kristoff, Casey, Sean, Jack, Chai, Jacob W., Colby., Kristyle, and C
ole H.

We will be staying in a nice airport hanger in Eastsound, so bring sleeping bags, pillows, pads as usual.

Schedule is still being worked out for Saturday morning.  But we will likely leave early in the morning. We will return after racing Sunday.  Last race is scheduled for 2pm. This means we will likely be on the 5:15 ferry home Sunday evening.

Drivers: Tom 3, Kathleen 3, John 4, Kathy 3, Scott 4 - Need at least one more.

Also, once again I am looking for someone to drive an empty 3 boat trailer to Seattle this week.  Let me know if you can do this.

Entry fee is $20.  Includes dinner saturday evening and lunch on Sunday.  You will need to pack a lunch on Saturday.  Also, bring some extra money for breakfast sunday morning.

There will also be a team costume contest!  Each team needs to come up with a costume theme for your team.  Costume Contest Prizes will be awarded Saturday night in a variety of categories that may include commitment, creativity, enthusiasm and combined team spirit.

Bring waiver and entry fee to the carpool Saturday morning.  Waiver is on the NOR here: http://hssailing.org/schedule_news/docs/nwisa_docs/Trick-or-Treat%E2%80%99_Open_Team_Race_Regatta_-_Notice_of_Race.pdf

Sailing Team Update

Cascadia Cup Recap
Great job to everyone at Cascadia Cup this last weekend.  The large fleet, puffy and shifty winds, put a big emphasis on getting a good start and having clean air on the first beat.  We will keep practicing to perfect this.  The results can be found here: http://scores.hssailing.org/f15/cascadia-cup/.

Etchells Regatta
This weekend there will be a small regatta with only a couple high school teams who have keelboat experience.  They will race etchells in Bellingham Bay and the winner will go to a national regatta in Florida.  If you would like to help out let me know.

BYC Youth Sailing Salmon Dinner
This Saturday there will be a Salmon Dinner at the BYC with proceeds going to the BYC Youth Sailing program.  This is a great event with really good salmon.  Since most of you are on the BYC Race Team you should definitely attend.  Cost is $20 for adults, $10 for youth.  I know homecoming is happening, but parents should attend.  Sign up here: http://byc.org/3rd-annual-bornstein-allsop-salmon-bbq/

Orcas Team Race Regatta
Oct 24-25 is a team race regatta on Orcas Island.  Entries will be limited at this regatta, so not everyone on our team will be able to sail.  I have registered 3 teams which would be the following sailors: Liam, Nick, Jacob F, Hannah, Benj, Shea, Quinn, Peyton, Mallory, Lera, Hailey, Chase, Maia, Kristoff, Casey, Sean, Jack, Chai, Jacob W., Colby., Kristyle, and Cole H.
However, the last group in red, starting with Casey, will not be able to go if we have to reduce down to only 2 teams.  I will know whether this will happen or not by Monday at 7:30pm and let you know.
Housing is still being worked out. If you can drive please let me know.  NOR and waiver can be found here: http://nwisa.hssailing.org/schedule/nwisa14-15/schedule/nwisa-s

Gig Harbor Open
Our last regatta of the fall will be the Gig Harbor Open Regatta on Nov 7th.  Everyone will be able to attend this regatta.  It was going to be in Poulsbo, WA, but now it will be held in Gig Harbor. Just a one day regatta.  Drivers will be needed.  And likely a couple tow vehicles.

Cascadia Cup Details

Our regatta this weekend is Cascadia Cup (Sat and Sun) in Seattle at SSP.

To get all the boats and sailors down this weekend we will need lots of drivers and tow vehicles.  Currently we have Steve (4), Scott (4), Anne (6), Tom (3), and Joan (4) driving.  That's 21 seats, we need 30.  So more drivers are needed please.   We also will need to tow three trailers of boats.  I can tow, who else can?

I plan to borrow a 3 boat trailer from Seattle (SSP) to use this weekend to get boats back and forth, but need to get the trailer.  If you know anyone coming up from Seattle this week that could tow an empty trailer to Bellingham please let me know.

The following 30 sailors are going:

Alejandro
Alex
Benjamin
Casey
Cedric
Chai
Chase
Colby
Cole H
Cole W
Connor
Hailey
Hannah
Jack
Jacob F
Jacob W
Jeffrey
Kristyle
Lauren
Lera
Liam
Maia
Mallory
Max
Nicholas
Peyton
Quinn
Sean
Shea
Trent

We will be leaving Saturday morning, and returning Sunday evening, just like Octoberfest.  We will be staying at Liam's Grandpas house again.  Bring sleeping pads, bags and pillows.

Entry fee is $15/ sailor.  Entry fee includes lunches both days.  We will be on our own for dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning.  So bring extra cash for each of these meals.

We will meet at the Sehome haggens at 7:30am on Saturday morning and carpool from there.

Bring the waiver and money with you Saturday morning.

Sailing Team Update

Here are some updates for upcoming events and regattas.

CAR WASH SATURDAY
Our car wash fundraiser is this Saturday at The Public Market on Cornwall (1530 Cornwall) from 10:00am-4:00pm.   Everyone please bring sponges, wash clothes squeegies, soap, buckets, etc. Please also make signs, make sure they are clear and legible from long distance.  We will be doing the fundraiser rain or shine, so come prepared for either.  Fundraising events are an important and mandatory part of being on the sailing team. We need these funds to be able to go to regattas!  Parents are encouraged to come as well.  And be sure to pass on to friends and family to come by and have their cars washed.

CASCADIA CUP OCT 10-11
Our next regatta is Cascadia Cup (Sat and Sun Oct 10-11) in Seattle at SSP.  Everyone signed up for this one!  However this is the one that got moved from its original dates, so if you can't go now, please let me know.  But I am optimistic that we can get everyone sailing if we get enough boats down to Seattle.  This will be the biggest hurdle as we will need 7 boats and we have one trailer that can fit 3.  So either we make multiple trips, or we clamshell FJs on two single trailers.  I will work on this, but if anyone is driving down to Seattle with a hitch on Friday Oct 9th or has other brilliant solutions please let me know.

We will meet at the Sehome haggens at 7:30am on Saturday morning (Oct 10th) and carpool from there. Carpool driver details will be coming soon.

PORTLAND TEAM RACE CANCELLED / PUMPKIN BOWL
The Portland Team Race regatta scheduled for Oct 17-18 has been cancelled.  If you are interested there is a youth regatta in West Vancouver this weekend.  We may send up the BYC Race Team for this one if enough of you are interested.  Lots of 29ers and Lasers and Optis racing at this one. There may be housing options available at this one, but we just drove back to Bellingham last time we went. More information here: http://www.wvyc.ca/racing/pumpkin-bowl

TRICK OR TREAT REGATTA
Oct 24-25 we will go over to Orcas Island for the Trick or Treat Team Race regatta.  We will have Burkes cabin to ourselves. Leave Sat morning, return Sun evening. Sleeping bags, pillows, and pads for this one.  It is very likely that everyone that wants to go will be able to for this one.

This gets us through October.  The NK regatta is the only one after that and details are still being worked out.  For those who like to plan ahead, I have the Spring schedule posted to the NWISA page (http://nwisa.hssailing.org/schedule/nwisa14-15/schedule/nwisa-s).

Sailing Meeting RECAP

Hello Sailors and Parents,

We had our pre-season meeting on Monday night - thank you to all who came! Here is a recap for everyone:

{You can find all the forms and most of the information at whatcomsailing.com}

ABOUT
All local high school sailing is organized and managed by Whatcom Sailing.  We focus on racing, not learning how to sail. The high school sailing team is a recognized club sport at each school and we treat it the same as any school sport. Therefore, the expectations are the same regarding attendance at practices and races as any sport. Practices and regattas are required except for the that are indicated as Optional on the schedule. Everyone is expected to work together as team, including helping your peers, traveling together, staying together, and competing together. All three high schools practice and compete together in most regattas.

Other sailing or sports:  Sometimes kids try to juggle multiple sports or other sailing opportunities while being on the sailing team.  This is not recommended, but just understand that if you miss practices or regattas that will be taken into consideration when deciding things like who races with who, who can go to regattas, etc.  We have to reward those who are committed to the team.

Unlike summer youth circuit racing, all the organization and registration for regattas is done by Whatcom Sailing.  This way the students can focus on school and not have to worry about planning for the next regatta.

EMAIL
Most all our communication is done via email, so please help us out by responding to emails quickly and make sure we have your current email address (students and parents).

FORMS
All sailors must fill out the forms attached, meet their school athletic requirements, and submit team fees. All forms must be filled out and turned in before our first practice. Team fees are $235; make check out to Whatcom Community Sailing

As a club sport, each sailor is required to comply with the schools' athletic eligibility requirements. Sailors can register online at your schools website as an athlete. This registration includes a Physical Form, Concussion Form and ASB Card. These items get turned into your school AD secretary. If you have not already scheduled a physical, do so ASAP so you can practice on Thursday. Go in to your athletic director secretary this week to verify that you have met all the school requirements.

PRACTICES
Our first practice is Thursday, Aug 27rd. We will practice Tues/Thurs 3:15 - 6:30 through October 29. We will be conducting a swim test of ALL sailors at the first practice. Please bring a wetsuit, towel and warm clothes. PARENTS - Please help us by scheduling dentist and doctors appointments around our regular practices. Practices are held at Lakewood. If you need a carpool, please contact us and we will put you in touch with another sailor from your school.

We require all sailors to have a Type III Coastguard approved life jacket, a whistle attached to your life jacket and a wetsuit. There will be days where we will require a wetsuit or you won't be able to sail. We strongly encourage proper gear, such as gloves, booties and no cotton. On our gear page on the website, we suggest places to buy gear and what kind of gear to get. (westcoastsailing.com offers high school students 15% off gear and free shipping, just enter code ISSA) Please ask us or your fellow sailors what gear we recommend if you have any questions.

8TH GRADERS
Please arrive at practice as soon as possible after school gets out. 8th graders can participate in all regattas on the schedule with the exception of district championships or national events if we qualify.  However, even at district championship events there are typically JV fleets that are open to 8th graders.  8th graders will check in with the 8th grade coach when they arrive.  That coach will either be Elsa Balton or Courtney Starks.

SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
We follow the same requirements as the high schools for athletes.  This means that students must attend all classes the day of a practice AND must be passing all classes.  If either of these are failed then you may not practice.

REGATTAS

Mt. Baker Open Regatta

This weekend we are going back down to Seattle for a one day regatta on Saturday only.  The regatta will be at the Mt. Baker Rowing and Sailing Center.

At this point it is uncertain how many boats we will have available to our team.  It is likely there will not be enough for everyone.  For this reason, I plan to leave the more experienced sailors home this weekend so we can focus on getting the newer sailors more race time.  We will have a practice on Sunday with the WWU team for the group staying home.  Here's the breakdown:

Mt. Baker Team:
Chase Cailin
Hannnah Sophia
Connor Quinn
Nina Stephanie
Cedric Kristoff
Nick Alejandro

Staying home and practicing Sunday:
Liam Shea
Jeff Mal
Benj Peyton

Drivers Needed:
With 12 sailors going we will likely need 3-4 drivers this Saturday.  Please indicate if you can drive on our signup: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d49acaf29a64-spring

We will be meeting at the Sehome Haggen's parking lot at 7:30 AM Saturday morning and driving down to Seattle.  Racing will go till around 5 and then we will get food and head over to Liam Hood's grandpas house for the night.  Sunday we will race till 3ish, pack up and head home.  Probably back by 7pm.

Going: Alejandro, Alex, Benj, Chase, Connor, Hannah, Jeffrey, Kristoff, Lauren, Liam, Maia, Mallory, Nick, Quinn, Shea, Sophia, Stephanie, Zach, Cailin, Cedric, Peyton, Nina, Sophia.

Since we are spending the night on Saturday you will want to bring a sleeping bag, pad, pillow, toiletries, etc.

Sailing Team Meeting Recap

Hello Sailors and Parents,

We had our pre-season meeting on Tuesday night - thank you to all who came! Here is a recap for everyone:

{You can find all the forms and most of the information at whatcomsailing.com}

ABOUT
The high school sailing team is a recognized club sport at each school and we treat it the same as any school sport. Therefore, the expectations are the same regarding attendance at practices and races as any sport. Everyone is expected to work together as team, including helping your peers, traveling together, staying together, and competing together. All three high schools practice and compete together in most regattas.

EMAIL
Most all our communication is done via email, so please help us out by responding to emails quickly and make sure we have your current email address (students and parents).

FORMS
All sailors must fill out the forms and submit fees outlined in the sailor packet attached. All forms must be filled out and turned in before our first practice. Team fees are $235; make check out to Whatcom Community Sailing. **You do not need to pay if you paid in the fall**

As a club sport, each sailor is required to comply with the schools' athletic eligibility requirements. Sailors can pick up a packet from their schools athletic department. This includes a Physical Form, Eligibility Packet, Concussion Form and ASB Card. These items get turned into your school AD secretary. If you have not already scheduled a physical, do so ASAP so you can practice on Tuesday. Go in to your athletic director secretary this week to verify that you have met all the school requirements.

PRACTICES
Our first practice is Tuesday, March 3rd. We will practice Tues/Thurs 3:15 - 6:30 through May 14th.

(westcoastsailing.com offers high school students 15% off gear and free shipping.) Please ask us or your fellow sailors what gear we recommend if you have any questions.
