Fall High School Sailing Update

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the last few days before school starts up again.  I wanted to give everyone a quick update on where we stand regarding fall sailing.  Unfortunately I don't have much to report other than it is still a possibility that we could have some practices and local regattas in late September and October.  There will not be district regattas or national events
At this point nothing is for sure, but watch for updates closely because if we get the go ahead we will move quickly to start up the team.

Until then, do what you can to get out on the water and keep in shape.

Sailing Team - Zoom Call - Special Guests

Team,

Over the next few weeks we will have some special guests to join us on our Zoom calls and talk to us about sailing.  Our first three guests are Robyn Lesh, Nevin Snow, and Steve Hunt.  First up will be Robyn tomorrow (April 22) at 6:00pm.  Below is a quick bio on each of the guests.  Your homework: Send me questions you would like to ask each of them.

Robyn Lesh - Robyn sailed on the Sehome team back in high school. Her senior year she won A fleet at Districts with Elsa.  She graduated in 2012 and then went to MIT where she sailed as well.  Her senior year she led her MIT team to an 8th place finish at nationals.  She is now working for the New York Yacht Club American Magic America's Cup team as one of the boat designers. She is very nice, very smart, and a very good sailor. Here's a video of her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKyc2QIBB08

Nevin Snow - Nevin is one of the most successful youth sailors in the past 10 years.  His team high school team won high school nationals and he won A fleet.  In college he sailed for Georgetown and won Sailor of the Year twice, was an All American every year, and won Nationals at least a couple times (I didn't look it up).  Either way, there aren't many better than he is in an FJ. He is now our countries best 49er sailor and will be in the next Olympics whenever that is.  He also crushes it in a Laser too. Read more here: https://snowagnese2020.com/about/

Steve Hunt - Steve coaches the Point Loma team, which if you don't know, has won probably 75% of the last 20 high school national championships.  I just made that number up, but I am guessing I am pretty close.  He is a professional sailor.  People hire him constantly to race with them and win.  Which he does, a lot.  He has won many national and world championships in Melges, Etchells, and J70s.   He also was an All American in college and won A fleet his senior year at both high school and college sailing nationals,

I will send Zoom call details tomorrow for Wednesdays call.

Sailing Team Update - COVID 19

ISSA has officially cancelled all high school sailing through May 1st, as well as District and National Championship regattas for the entire season.  This means that all regattas on our schedule are officially cancelled.  There is still a slim chance that things will settle down and local in-district regattas and practices may happen in May.

I know this is a lame way for the year to end, especially for the seniors who have been on the team for many years.  But there is one regatta that will never be cancelled, The Golden Bailer Trophy!  We will have this race.  It may not be until August, but it will happen eventually.  We will also have an end of year party, eventually.  Maybe we can convince Morgan to give another speech!

As soon as things settle down and it is safe to get back on the water in any capacity I will let you know.

Until then, stay healthy, and watch some fun videos:

Matching up with school closures, sailing practice is cancelled starting immediately until at least April 24th.

I am going to try to set up online chalk talks and rules talks.  I know, I know, you can't imagine a more exciting thing to do.  But let's do it anyway.  Stay tuned.

Oak Harbor Regatta

This weekends regatta is in Oak Harbor.  For regatta planning this year I am going to try a new online spreadsheet system.  Here is the link to the document:

These documents will have most of the details and allow you to input changes so the process is more dynamic.  Yellow cells are ones you can edit.

The biggest change for the weekend is that we are planning to come back each day and not stay down there.  So we will need drivers each day.  Currently we are short on drivers so please let me know if you can drive.  I could also use on more tow vehicle.

We will meet at Sehome Haggens at 8:30 tomorrow morning and depart shortly thereafter. The rest of the schedule will be on the spreadsheet.

BRING waiver, money, all gear. Lunch is provided both Saturday and Sunday and morning snacks on Sunday will be provided.

Sailing Pre-Season Meeting Recap

Hello Sailors and Parents,

Below is a recap of the pre-season meeting.

ABOUT
All local high school sailing is organized and managed by Whatcom Sailing.  We focus on racing, not learning how to sailThe high school sailing team is a recognized club sport at each school and we treat it the same as any school sport. Therefore, the expectations are the same regarding attendance at practices and races as any sport. Practices and regattas are required. Everyone is expected to work together as team, including helping your peers, traveling together, staying together, and competing together. All three high schools practice and compete together in most regattas.

Other sailing or sports:  Sometimes kids try to juggle multiple sports or other sailing opportunities while being on the sailing team.  This is not allowed, and please understand that if you miss practices or regattas, that will be taken into consideration when deciding things like who races with who, who can go to regattas, etc.  We have to reward those who are committed to the team.

Unlike summer youth circuit racing, all the organization and registration for regattas is done by Whatcom Sailing.  This way the students can focus on school and not have to worry about planning for the next regatta.

EMAIL
Most all our communication is done via email, so please help us out by responding to emails quickly and make sure we have your current email address (students and parents).

FEES
Cost is $200 per season.  If you do not make the team you will be refunded the full amount. We never want cost to be a reason why someone is not participating so please contact me if you need financial assistance.  We have scholarship money for kids that are on the free or reduced lunch program.

REGISTRATION STEPS
1. Register and pay with Whatcom Sailing.  Click here to Register.
2. Complete the school athletic registration online.  This is now being done with a new Final Forms program.  See attached documents for more information.  8th graders DO NOT need to do this step.  Home schooled kids DO need to do this.
3. Get cleared with your school.  Go to your school and get cleared with your AD secretary.  8th graders and home schooled kids DO NOT need to do this step.
REGISTRATION NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOU CAN PRACTICE.

TRYOUTS
The first week of practice is tryouts week.  All sailors must be completely registered and paid before trying out, if you do not make the team you will be refunded.

PRACTICES
Our first practice is this coming March 3rd.  For the first practice please meet at the BYC downstairs. We will practice Tues/Thurs 3:45 - 6:30 through May 14th. PARENTS - Please help us by scheduling dentist and doctors appointments around our regular practices. Practices are held at Zuanich Park dock. If you need a carpool, please contact us and we will put you in touch with another sailor from your school.

We require all sailors to have a Type III Coastguard approved life jacket, a whistle attached to your life jacket and a wetsuit. There will be days where we will require a wetsuit or you won't be able to sail. We strongly encourage proper gear, such as gloves, booties and no cotton. On our gear page on the website, we suggest places to buy gear and what kind of gear to get. (westcoastsailing.com offers high school students 15% off gear and free shipping, just enter code ISSA) Please ask us or your fellow sailors what gear we recommend if you have any questions.

NEW REQUIRED ITEM THIS YEAR: Running shoes and workout gear.  We will be having workout days this season where we will be running and doing other cardio exercises.  You will be expected to run and workout with the team at any practice.

We would like you to consider buying and wearing a helmet as well.  Especially if you are new to sailing or have had a previous concussion.  Concussions can happen by getting hit in the head by the boom and can be very serious.  Here is more information about sailing concussions:

8TH GRADERS
Please arrive at practice as soon as possible after school gets out. 8th graders can participate in all regattas as long as there is space.

SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
We follow the same requirements as the high schools for athletes.  This means that students must attend all classes the day of a practice AND must be passing all classes.  If either of these are failed then you may not practice.  If you miss a class you need to get it excused and cleared with the AD secretary before practice.

REGATTAS
Please see the website for a schedule of all regattas.  www.whatcomsailing.com

TEXT MESSAGING NOTIFICATIONS
We use a text message notification system for all the sailors. The messaging service is called Remind. To sign up send a text message
TO: 81010
Message: @sailboats

If you are a high schooler, we would like you to be on an additional list so please send another message
TO:81010
Message: @bhssailing   (if you go to BELLINGHAM)
or      @shssailing   (if you go to SEHOME)
or      @sqhssail      (if you go to SQUALICUM)

PARENTS
We are excited to have your sailor on the team, and will be kept very busy organizing practices & regattas, and teaching them how to become awesome racers! So, we will need your help! Regatta travel is usually based on parent drivers. We try to reimburse for gas, and food is usually free for parents or very cheap. Please take a look at the regatta schedule and make note on which regattas you would be able to drive.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email or visit the website for information. I am excited to be starting another season of sailing!

See you on the water!
