RE: THANKS!

Congratulations and a huge thanks also need to be given to Scott Wilson for organizing such an amazing event! This was no small feat as evidenced by this massive list of volunteers and supporters. It was a pleasure to be part of this great group of people, and is great to see the level of support youth sailing has in our area. We should all be proud.

It is enough work to try to pull together one event of this magnitude, but to pull off two back to back events with this many moving parts in very trying conditions with such great success, deserves a huge round of applause. You did a great job, and I also heard many compliments from those in attendance both weekends who had attended and organized similar events.

Soup!!

Thank you for all the delicious soup donations last weekend. I can't even begin to explain how grateful the sailors and race committee members were for a warm bowl of soup after a cold day of sailing.  The parents and coaches were raving about the soup!

We are doing it again this weekend!  On November 8, this Saturday Whatcom Community Sailing, along with the BYC, will be hosting the 2014 National COLLEGE Singlehand Championships here in Bellingham. All of the funds left over from this event will go directly to our sailing team. In order to keep the cost low, we are asking families to donate soups again as part of our meal line-up for the weekend long event.

On Saturday night, Nov. 8, we will be serving a soup bar to the sailors and race committee members. If you could please sign up to make and deliver a soup to the BYC on Saturday, before noon, it would be greatly appreciated. Please make sure that your soup is labeled, along with your pot so we can get it back to you in a timely manner. We are hoping that each soup pot can serve 10 people. Thank you so much for your donation and support!

Housing Needed

One more thing: Some of the teams need housing this weekend.  Let me know if you have floor space that some kids could sleep on.  When hosting kids you don't need to provide much.  Just floor space and a shower is nice.  The kids bring sleeping bags and pads and are used to sleeping on floors.  Food is provided at the regatta so you don't need to feed them.

Let me know if you have space,

Thanks,

NW Singlehanded Qualifiers

I heard good things about this weekends regatta down at SSP.  I will want to hear more at practice tomorrow. Not sure how everyone finished but I heard 4th place by Shea and Karina!

This weekend is the NW singlehanded qualifiers which we are hosting here in Bellingham.  There will be two fleets, Laser Full Rig and Laser Radial Rig.  Anyone is welcome to race in this one if you can find a boat to sail.  So far I have heard that Jeffrey, Liam, Benj, Shea, and Jacob are racing.

Entry fee is $35 per person. Additional meal tickets are $15 each for parents.

Since we are hosting this event we will need help with food.  Shawn Walker is taking the lead organizing food for this weekend but she could use help from other parents.  Please contact her if you are available to help. (shawndoeswalk@aol.com)

Sailors not racing should come help run races if you are available.  Everyone should arrive at 9:00am on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Let me know if you have questions.

Registration and waiver attached.

Directions: To Sail Sand Point http://www.sailsandpoint.org/directions/

Be at Sehome Haggen parking lot by 8am on Saturday morning. Have your registration form and waiver filled out and $35 fee to give to Steve Hood. We'll leave as a group by 8:15am (or as soon as possible).  Bring money for breakfast on Sunday morning (typically stop at grocery store for sailors to buy what they want).

Overnight stay at Liam and Mallory's grandpa's house (Bill Hood). You can contact Steve Hood at 360-306-1022 if you need to contact a sailor during the day (when they are out on the water and not near their cell phones). For new sailors, it's best to pack overnight clothes/toiletries/sleeping pad and bag separately from sailing gear. Bring a plastic bag to contain wet gear in your separate sail bag. At night, sailors do their best to hang stuff to dry in limited space, but you'll have you overnight bag with you near where you're sleeping. Questions? Ask a returning sailor.  Parents are welcome to sleep at Bill's house (carpeted floor or couch).

High School Sailing Pre-Season Meeting

Sailors and Parents,

Next Monday, Aug 25th, we will have our Pre-Season meeting, 6pm @ Lakewood.  This meeting is for both parents and students.  We have many important topics to cover including practice and regatta schedules, expectations, and required paperwork. It will also be a good meeting to attend for new sailors interested in joining the team, so encourage anyone who might be interested to come.

Practice and Regatta schedule for the fall season are posted on the website: http://www.whatcomsailing.com/schedule.html

Practice starts Tuesday Sep 2rd @ 3:15 at Lakewood.

FORMS / WAIVERS
Attached are the forms and waivers that each sailor, new or returning, needs to fill out.  Please complete these forms and bring to the meeting along with team dues which are $235. ALSO, all new sailors must pick up an athletic packet from your school, fill it out, and return it to your school.  So to be clear, the attached packet gets turned into me at the pre-season meeting, and the school athletic packet gets turned into the school. A sports physical is also required, so get the schedule ASAP.  All this paperwork is required before you can practice. For a list of everything that is required see the Join Page of our website.

We will go over all this in more detail on Monday, but feel free to contact me if you have questions!

Scott,

Hope all is well with you!  I understand that the High School Sailing Team
has had a great Fall and Spring season.  Congratulations!

The MC Scow JR Regatta is currently scheduled for Sunday, July 20, 2014.  I
was hoping that you would pass the word to the High School Sailing Team and
possibly the BYC Junior Sailing Team.  This years regatta will be open to
all junior sailors age 20 and under.

Last year we had a total of six (6) boats competing with a total of nine
(9) competitors.  It would be great to get more JR's involved.

Competitors need not worry about having a boat to use.  Boat assignments
will be sorted out at the skippers meeting on the day of the event.

It would be great if Competitors would fill out the attached Registration
Form and Liability Release Form prior to the event and then provide these
forms to me, along with the $5 entry fee, on the day of the event prior to
the skippers meeting.

(See attached file: MC Scow Junior Regatta Registration Form.pdf)(See
attached file: Liability Release Form.pdf)

Also attached is the Sailing Instructions.

(See attached file: MC Scow Junior Regatta SI 2014.pdf)

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Bake Sale Saturday

This weekend the sailing team will be hosting a bake sale at the Bellingham Yacht Club. We are asking each sailor to donate at least one dessert item.  We have lots of fun and festive items coming in, but we need more. The sailing team traveling to Silverdale this weekend will be meeting at the BYC on Friday at 5:00pm (not Sehome Haggens) which makes it a perfect time to drop off your items. If you are not going to the regatta this weekend or just want to help out, you can still bring your baked goods on Friday at 5pm or Saturday morning at 10:30am.  The bake sale will go from 10:30am - 1:30pm.

Thanks for your support!

Sehome Sailing Team wins NW Championship

I'm very proud to announce that your local Sehome high school sailing team just won the NW District Championships this weekend and will head to San Diego in two weeks to compete for the National Championships.  The team beat 16 other northwest teams from Washington and Oregon after 28 hard fought races down in Anacortes.

The team was lead by skippers Miles Johannessen, a senior, and Liam Hood, a sophomore.  Both skippers sailed very fast with consistently good finishes.  Their crews consisted of senior Elise Chambers, and sophomores Riley Allsop, Shea Walker, and Jeffrey Werner.  Nearly all of these sailors went through one of the local learn to sail programs at the Bellingham Yacht Club or WWU Lakewood.

The team will now head to San Diego for nationals and race against 18 teams from around the country.  The team will be holding fundraisers to pay for the trip over the next two weeks, so look for an opportunity to help them out.

This weekend the team will be heading down to Seattle for a two day team race at Sail Sand Point.  It should be a good weekend of sun and wind.

The team going will be Courtney, Sawyer, Zach, Sophia, Cailin, Chase, Ali, Benj, Cameron, Jeffrey, Riley, Shea, Elise, Liam, Fanny, and Miles.

Drivers Needed.  So far we have, Scott - 5 kids, Andrea Hood - 3 kids.  I have heard that possibly the walkers can take 4 down with Steve Hood bringing 4 back Sunday?  Please confirm if that would work.  We would still need one more driver.

Schedule:
7:15 Sat. Meet at Sehome Haggens
Race all day.
Done racing around 2:30 on Sunday.  Load boats then leave, back around 5.

Entry Fee:  $15.  Includes lunch and snacks Saturday and Sunday.  Please also bring money for dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning.  I would suggest at least $20 for these two meals. Make checks out to Sail Sand Point.

We will be staying at the Hood house as usual Saturday night, so bring sleeping pad, pillow, and sleeping bag.

No waiver this weekend.
