Fall End-of-Season Party Nov. 14

Good evening,

We are excited to celebrate the fall sailing season with you all!

Thank you to all of the sailors who came to practice last week with their availability and ideas for the end-of-season party. As we discussed at practice, the Fall End-of-Season Party is a potluck this Thursday, November 14th from 5:00-7:00pm at Bellingham Yacht Club in the upstairs bar room.
Apologies for getting this email out so late.

We have also been approved to use the upstairs of the yacht club! Thank you to Ajax's parents Jayna and Andy Neumann for their help with yacht club logistics. We will be doing a potluck, so anyone bringing food please sign up on this list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1W0ZXKvJFnO1chY3ARauGfQC0eK1Kzd7bHSC121JjouU/edit?usp=sharing

Please let us know if you have any questions and we hope to see you Thursday night. :)

Last week of practice + End of season party + Turkey Bowl

Hi Everyone,

This is the last week of practice for the season. Due to the limited daylight, practice will end at 5:30 PM on both days.

Typically for the end of fall season we have a potluck in the downstairs of the BYC, and then for the end of spring when the weather is a little nicer we do a potluck at a sailor's family's house. We will be asking sailors this week about a good date to do this end-of-season potluck as each sailor will get to be recognized so it is important we pick a time and day that most can make it. It will likely be a weekday evening in the next few weeks.

Turkey Bowl (NOV 23 - 24) is a one-off regatta hosted by CYC Seattle. I'm going to be putting together a team like last year. Sailors have the option of sailing FJs, Lasers, or Optis. This regatta is non rotational, so sailors are spending the entire day out on the water being coached by me in a powerboat. Let me know if you are interested in learning more or attending.

Find out more about Turkey Bowl here.

Best,
Cooper

Photos

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share some awesome photos taken at the last two regattas, plus some photos taken by Cooper and I at practice.

Oz's dad Adam Resnick took photos at both the North Regionals and Cascadia Cup regattas, and has shared his smugmug photo albums for both:
Thank you Adam!

BHS Sailor Emma Moore and WWU sailors Carolyn Harmon and Malcom Duncan-Graves also took photos at North Regionals, which we have added to the Fall 2024 Whatcom Sailing Photo Drive. Thank you to all three of them for their photos as well!

And finally, Cooper has been taking photos at practice to show sailors how their maneuvers look from an outside perspective. We will continue to periodically update this photo drive to share feedback photos taken at practice, as well as photos taken at regattas.

Thank you again to those who took and shared photos! If anyone else has photos that they would like me to add, or if you have any questions, please let me know.

Anna

Thank you again to everyone who is driving down this weekend. We couldn't do it without you.

We'll go over final details with sailors today but please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sailors (18):
Adham, Adrien, Ajax, Atticus, August, Avery, Axel, Bella, Dawson, Emmett, Grace, Hans, James, Marin, Max, Oz, Tristan, and Tyce (18 Sailors).

Carpools:
Sailors are assumed to need a carpool unless otherwise written in the signups. Sailors are not assigned to specific carpools beforehand- we just make sure there are enough seats in cars and sailors sort themselves into cars Saturday morning.
Carpool drivers and sailors will meet at the Sehome/Samish Way Haggen's at 7:45AM on Saturday, and 7:00AM Sunday. Carpools are driving there and back both days. End time Saturday is variable/weather dependent.

As a nontraditional sport, we rely on parents to help transport the team and boats to and from away events, so we really appreciate all parents who are volunteering to do so this weekend!

Drivers - Neuman (4 & towing), Norwood (1), Vondrell (3), Resnick (3), Brewin (2) and Cooper (4 & towing). (17 Spots**)

**If anyone who is signed up already can drive ONE ADDITIONAL SAILOR, or any parents are planning on driving their own sailor and did not list it on the spreadsheet, please let us know ASAP because we are currently short one seat.

Fees:
$30 total for the weekend: $10/Sailor fee for registration, paid to coaches (who then pay the regatta host) $10/sailor for lunch for the weekend, and recommended $10/sailor gas donation to your carpool driver for the weekend.
Cash or Venmo for the fees- please give registration fee to coaches by Thursday. If these fees are a barrier for your family, please let the coaches know and we will provide a scholarship.

Lunch:
Sailors are responsible for their own breakfast both days and should bring a water bottle. Dawson's mom Lorena is providing lunch both days for sailors, which is covered by the $10 lunch fee. Thank you Lorena!

Schedule/Address/NOR:
Notice of Race includes the racing schedule, address of the sailing venue, and more. Sailors and parents please read it!

Re: Bellingham North Regional Regatta October 5th & 6th

Good evening everyone,

We have SeaFeast going on this weekend as well, in the parking lot area near the Fisherman's Pavilion, so parking will be extremely limited and some parking areas are closed. We'll have to utilize the area near the Squalicum Boathouse and likely use the loading zone to drop off sailors and items and then park elsewhere. I have included a link here which shows a map of the parking lot: https://www.bellinghamseafeast.org/overview SeaFeast Map . Please note there are also booths along parts of the pathway, so all of the teams will be setting up our tents near the dock to keep separate from the vendor tents. I'll let you all know if anything changes or if I have any more updates on parking and SeaFeast!

The regatta will happen as normal, same schedule as listed in the NOR (linked here) in the previous email.
10am report time Saturday and 9am report time Sunday, although if you are worried about parking I would give it some extra time so sailors can be at the dock ready to go by report time.

The visiting teams are also in the loop about SeaFeast parking and will be launching their boats on Friday night to avoid any parking lot traffic jams on Saturday morning.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Best,

Anna

Hosting North Regionals Regatta October 5th and 6th

Hi Everyone,

We are hosting a regatta on October 5th and 6th! This is a smaller regional event and we are expecting 30 to 40 sailors from Orcas, Anacortes, Oak Harbor, and Seattle.

We will need some parent volunteers to make this regatta great. This is the list of current jobs that we are looking to fill. Many of these jobs don't require any previous experience, so don't worry if this is your first time volunteering.
  • Registration (Checking in teams as they arrive)
  • Photographer (On a powerboat taking photos of the regatta)
  • Dock Lead (Helping boats with breakdowns / first aid, has radio)
  • Markset (On a powerboat moving marks. Drivers have to have a Washington State Boaters card, but markset seconds do not)
  • Scorer (On the RC boat helping Cooper score)
  • Making lunch for volunteers (Easy sandos or burritos for 6 to 8 volunteers)
If you are interested in helping out, let us know!

It is a common courtesy to house visiting teams. All that is expected is some extra floor space where sailors plus a chaperone can set up sleeping pads & bags. Teams can vary in size, so let us know how many you can take. You don't have to offer hot showers or meals, just some floor space. I know this is new to many of you, so please reach out if you have any concerns or questions.

Thanks,
Cooper

Summer Racing Opportunity

Hi Everyone,

This summer, I'll be coaching a ILCA (Laser) Team out of CBC. We will be attending regattas in the Northwest Youth Racing Circuit (NWYRC) summer series. It is a series of big regattas with 150+ sailors across 5 different kinds of boats and is a great source of competitive racing. Racing Lasers in the NWYRC is a great way for youth sailors to get better at dinghy sailing locally.

The summer season runs from June 26th to September 5th. We have two practices and one race night each week. The team will attend four regattas and sailors have the opportunity to go to clinics. Find out more information about the team here. Registration is live!

Summer Sailing is different from High School sailing in a couple of ways. The biggest is there is no rotating at regattas. Instead, regattas start a little later in the day and sailors get breaks while on the water to eat lunch. Each sailor will sail all day and be supported by me on a coach boat. Because of this, the race team is limited to 10 sailors. Lasers are also a different boat than FJs, with only one person in the boat instead of two like we have as the standard for High School. With the time on the water and the style of the boat, laser sailing is the best way to grow racing skills and confidence. I find that it transfers back to FJ sailing for the school year.

The Community Boating Center offers both full and partial scholarships for programs including the race team. We do not want cost to be a reason for not joining. Scholarship form. Let me know if you have any questions about scholarships.

We will be having an info meeting next Tuesday, June 4th at 7pm in the upstairs of CBC's new Wheelhouse building. Please let me know if you plan on attending by responding to this email.

CBC will be running a fundraiser for youth programs and scholarships this Friday May 31st. "Empty the Boatyard" and enjoy a fun evening celebrating youth at the Community Boating Center. Find more info about Empty the Boatyard here

I'm super excited to be able to offer this race team to all of you! This is the #1 way to get better for the highschool season, and is a fun summer of sailing.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Fleet Race Champs this Weekend

Hi everyone,

We are excited for fleet race champs this weekend in Anacortes! We are driving there and back both days, it's about an hour drive. We will be meeting at the Sehome Hill Haggen's at 8:30am on Saturday and 7:30am on Sunday.

Everyone who signed up is going:
Aiofe, Atticus, August, Avery, Bella, Campbell, Cole, Emma, Finn, Frank, Hans S, Hans V, Katy, Keagan, Max, Max, Oscar, Oz, Sofia, Tristan (20 sailors)

Drivers: Parents/family of:
Aiofe (1), Cole (3 (Sunday only)), Emma (3), Katy, Oscar (5), Oz (4), Tristan (1). Thank you to everyone who signed up to drive!

With the parents listed above driving and Cooper and I each driving a 3 boat trailer we should be more than good! If anyone who signed up to drive can't anymore, or if anyone else is planning on driving just their sailors, please let me know.

Group food: Thank you to Karen Woo for leading plans on group food. If any parents are interested in helping that would be much appreciated; please text or email Karen at karenswoo@gmail.com if you would like to help.

Waiver: Each sailor must have a signed Anacortes Waterfront Alliance waiver to compete. Please complete the waiver here: https://forms.gle/DaVzdWW5vV9b2YnX6

Cost: $25-35. Entry fee is $10, plus $15 for group food. Please also bring $5-10 for gas if you/your sailor is getting a ride from another parent. Of course, cost should not be a barrier- if the cost is an issue, please let us know.

This is the final away regatta of the normal season, and after this we have the annual golden bailer race at home on Bham Bay and our end-of-season potluck and awards. More to follow on those fronts.

Let us know if you have any questions about this weekend! See you soon.

Best,
Anna

Whatcom Sailing Remaining Regattas

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for making it out for an awesome regatta this past weekend at Ranking Regatta #3 at Vashon Island! That was our final overnight event and our second-to-last fleet race of the season. Big thanks to all the parents who drove and organized food!

The rest of the Regatta signups will close tonight at 8:00 pm. Please double-check all the info and update anything that has changed.

April 20-21 Bellingham Gold TR Quals - Sehome is the only team with enough sailors to have a gold TR team.

April 20-21 Leschi Silver TR Quals - Mixed team allowed. We can only send 8 sailors because we only have one berth. Driving back home for Saturday night.

We will send out the logistics for the regattas this weekend once sign-ups close tonight. Apologies that we are a little behind on this one, Vashon took a lot of time and energy.

April 27-28 Oak Harbor Gold TR Champs - Sehome only if they qualify @Bham quals the weekend of the 20th. Driving back home for Saturday night.

April 27-28 Sail Sand Point Silver/Gallium TR Champs - Have to qualify at Leschi Silver TR the weekend of the 20th. Driving back home for Saturday night.

May 4-5 Anacortes Fleet Race Champs - Gold and Silver fleet race regatta. Open to all sailors. We are planning on taking everyone. Driving back home for Saturday night.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi all,

Some updates on the regatta on Vashon Island this weekend:

Carpools: Thanks to those who responded so far and to parents who can drive. We are extremely close to having enough seats for everyone. If any parents are planning on driving their own sailors but cannot drive others, please let us know so we can take your sailor off the list of who needs rides.
We will also be bringing 6 boats (in 2 trailers, borrowing WWU's trailer) to provide enough boats for everyone going.

Camping: We will be tent camping with other teams at AYH ranch on Friday and Saturday night. The team will be staying as a group and we will book as a group once we get the confirmed numbers of sailors and parents attending. Camping is $10 per sailor per night, $20 per adult per night.

Food: The host team, Gig Harbor, is providing dinner on Saturday and breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Any parents wanting dinner should let us know so we can request additional meal tickets from the host.
Our team will do our own group dinner Friday night and lunch both Saturday and Sunday, plus lots of snacks. Thank you to the parents helping plan group food for our team. Group food will be $15 per person for the weekend.

Cost: With group food, camping, the registration fee, and the ferry, sailors should plan to bring $75 to cover weekend costs. Please let us know if this cost is not doable for you or your sailor- we want this event to be accessible to everyone.

Please review this planning spreadsheet which includes a list of what each sailor should bring, and group food and carpool plans (in progress). Please also view the host's Notice of Race (NOR), which includes the daily schedule.

We will continue to update with logistics planning as we hear back from more sailors at practice today, and from parents on driving. It will be super fun to have all skill levels and schools in one place for the weekend!

Best,
Anna
